With the “One Piece” series progressing into its Final Saga, recent storylines have shown signs that it’s prepared to reveal some of its most significant and long-held secrets. The Egghead Arc and the Elbaf Arc have left fans spellbound with substantial revelations about enigmas like Joyboy, Imu, and the mysteries surrounding the “One Piece” world itself. However, aside from these monumental disclosures, the latest arc of “One Piece” might also shed light on a seemingly trivial yet persistent mystery that has puzzled fans for years – the identity of Luffy’s mother.
In Chapter 1156, the dazzling Rocks Pirates certainly took center stage, but nestled within those captivating scenes featuring Gloriosa and Shakuyaku was a fresh character introduction: none other than Tritoma, the former Empress of Kuja who made her first canon appearance outside of SBS. This remarkable woman even received her own formal presentation in this chapter. As for our curious observer, I couldn’t help but notice that she was handing over a stack of fan letters to Gloriosa – and if fan theories hold true, Tritoma could potentially be none other than Luffy’s mother!
One Piece‘s Elbaf Arc May Have Snuck in Luffy’s Potential Mother
In Volume 109 of “One Piece,” published by Eiichiro Oda, a fan questioned about the past empresses of Amazon Lily. This is where Tritoma was first introduced, accompanied by an image of her as a young woman and the disclosure that she perished due to the enigmatic ‘love-sickness’ prevalent in Kuja. Over time, fans have speculated extensively about Luffy’s mother’s identity, with theories becoming almost comical within the series community.
Initially, when Tritoma was unveiled, it appeared for the first time that she might be a genuine contender. The primary reason for this was a striking physical resemblance, as Tritoma’s round eyes and face along with her thin eyebrows bore a strong likeness to Luffy. This resemblance has become more apparent in the latest chapter, where the younger version of Tritoma shown in Chapter 1156 looks even more like Luffy, right down to her smile which is remarkably similar, though not as wide or toothy. Despite the yet-to-be-revealed details about her hair and eye color from the anime adaptation of the latest chapter, Tritoma remains a very strong prospect, given that she meets numerous other criteria beyond her appearance.
Tritoma Would Tick All the Boxes as Luffy’s Mother
Primarily, Tritoma could have been born around the same time as Dragon, which means she’d be an appropriate age for being a possible mother figure to Luffy. In Chapter 1156, the story is set about 48 years back, when Dragon would have been seven. Though Tritoma seems to be in her mid-teens or older, her age difference with Dragon is similar to that between Luffy and Boa Hancock. Therefore, this theory is quite believable.
Regarding Tritoma’s demise due to unrequited love, akin to Gloriosa and Shakky being drawn to characters like Roger and Rayleigh, it is plausible that Tritoma harbored feelings for Dragon. This theory, however, remains speculative at best. Given that Dragon maintained a distance from Luffy to safeguard him and to ensure Luffy wouldn’t be used against him, it’s possible that he had to abandon Tritoma when he formed the Revolutionary Army, leading her to suffer from love sickness. Lastly, if Tritoma is Luffy’s mother, this might shed light on why Kuma sent Luffy to Amazon Lily during the timeskip, especially since Kuma was aware of his relation to Dragon at that time.
Despite various speculations, it remains uncertain if author Oda will disclose Luffy’s true mother to fans since her character doesn’t seem crucial to the current plot. Yet, when Dragon emerges prominently in the Final Saga, this might alter the situation. Tritoma, who appeared both in the SBS and main series, hints that she could play a more significant role in One Piece than fans anticipate.
