New Prime Video Movie Earns a Disastrous Rotten Tomatoes Score: “The Worst Movie of All Time”

The trailer for War of the Worlds suggests that things are more dire than they seem.” In this updated version, the movie is presented as a reimagined adaptation of H.G. Wells’ 1898 science fiction novel, where Ice Cube (famous for his role in Friday) portrays a Department of Homeland Security employee who works from behind a computer screen to save the world, following the activation of extraterrestrial aliens on Earth by a government surveillance program called Goliath.

This year, only two films have earned the uncommon zero percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Prime Video’s “War of the Worlds” being the second one to receive this mark (following the movie “Alarum,” starring Sylvester Stallone, which was evaluated by a few critics).

In my perspective, Peter Debruge, a movie critic specializing in variety films, calls out the chaotic disaster movie as essentially an extended advertisement for Amazon. He wonders aloud how many viewers will endure this nonsensical spectacle until the pivotal scene where the Amazon delivery person steps in to save the day, instructing the protagonist, Will, to place an official order on Amazon to activate the drone.

The screen adaptation of “War of the Worlds” delves into the sensitive topic of data protection as the extraterrestrial invasion shifts its target, symbolizing the narrative’s critique of privacy issues in America, according to Brian Orndorf’s review on Blu-ray.com. Yet, the exploration lacks depth, and the portrayal of real news sources like Facebook, Fox News, and Joe Rogan, as well as the inclusion of conspiracy theories, seems somewhat peculiar, hinting that the production may have been tailored towards a particular audience at some point in its development process.

According to YouTube critic Jeremy Jahns and many other viewers, the movie is not good at all. This sentiment is echoed on Metacritic where it received a score of 1.8, indicating widespread dislike. On IMDb, over 6,000 users gave it a weighted rating of 3.3 out of 10. The reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are not much better: the low-budget sci-fi film only has 11% approval on the Popcornmeter and an average rating of 1.2 out of 5 stars.

In a one-star review by Daja Y, it states: “There’s poor. There’s extremely poor. And then there’s the latest adaptation of ‘War of the Worlds,’ which is essentially unbearable in every conceivable aspect.” The invasion depicted in the film serves as a mere backdrop and is seldom focused on, with Ice Cube’s character and his video screen stealing the show. To put it bluntly, this movie is almost completely unwatchable due to its poor quality and waste of time.

The movie was terribly disappointing, and it seems like a prank, according to Jasmyn M’s review. Nic G concurs, labeling it as ‘the worst film of this century.’ Critics panned War of the Worlds, describing it as ‘hilariously bad,’ ‘the worst movie ever made,’ ‘atrocious,’ and ‘nothing more than a glorified advertisement for Amazon.’ Another user lamented that Orson Welles, creator of the original 1938 radio drama, never had to witness this disrespect towards his classic.
