Science fiction and horror often appear together, a combination that dates back to classic novels like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. This blend has also been successful in film, from Ridley Scott’s Alien to more recent hits like The Substance. Recently, HBO Max added a popular sci-fi horror movie from the 2010s to its streaming service, coinciding with the announcement of a sequel.
Fans of the Happy Death Day series can now watch the original 2017 film on HBO Max, starting March 1st. The movie follows Tree Gelbman, a college student played by Jessica Rothe, who finds herself stuck in a time loop, reliving the day of her murder until she can figure out who’s trying to kill her. A sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, came out in 2019, and a third film, Happy Death Day 3, is officially being planned.
Happy Death Day Is a Hilarious Slasher Worth Watching
If you’re looking for a fun and exciting slasher film, Happy Death Day delivers. It’s a clever mix of Groundhog Day and Scream, using a time loop to create a thrilling mystery. Instead of being purely frightening, the repetitive nature of the horror is actually entertaining, with increasingly creative and over-the-top (but not overly gory) kills. The main character, Tree, is a compelling ‘final girl’ who grows throughout the film, and the masked killer is a delightfully fun villain. You’ll likely want to watch it again and again!
The movie Happy Death Day is a well-made slasher film that was surprisingly followed by an equally good sequel, Happy Death Day 2U (2019). The sequel leaned into science fiction, featuring a parallel dimensions concept similar to Back to the Future Part II, and even earned a slightly higher critic score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes (the first film had 71%). Fans are now waiting to see if the upcoming Happy Death Day 3 can successfully conclude the trilogy. While details are still under wraps, actress Jessica Rothe revealed to Collider in October that the third film will bring Tree’s story to a satisfying end and take the audience in unexpected directions.
