The 1980s were a fantastic time for horror movies, and the ’90s continued that success with several memorable films. Classics like The Sixth Sense, Misery, Scream, and The Silence of the Lambs thrived in theaters. Many of the decade’s best horror films are now being remade for new audiences, and a beloved cult classic recently became available to stream on Tubi.
With Hollywood’s trend of revisiting old favorites, a remake of the 1998 sci-fi horror film The Faculty is in the works. Luckily for fans, the original is now available to stream for free on Tubi as of December 1st. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Kevin Williamson of Scream fame, the movie takes place in a small Ohio town where a group of high school students must fight back after alien parasites begin taking over their teachers and classmates. The film stars Jordana Brewster, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Usher, Elijah Wood, and Jon Stewart, and earned $63 million worldwide.
The Faculty Is a Top-Tier ‘90s Horror Movie
Even just the cast of fresh faces in The Faculty could have earned it a dedicated fanbase, but the movie became a standout ’90s horror hit because it’s genuinely well-made. It cleverly mixed the teen horror style made popular by Scream with the familiar elements of alien invasion films, and included nods to classic monster movies. The Faculty leaned into its low-budget roots, creating a fun, over-the-top experience that still delivers genuine thrills and scares.
Despite mixed reviews (a 58% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and underwhelming box office numbers compared to director Robert Williamson’s previous horror films, The Faculty gained a dedicated cult following over the years. This likely led to the recent announcement that Miramax is developing a remake of the 1998 sci-fi thriller. Robert Rodriguez will produce, with Drew Hancock writing the script, and BoulderLight Pictures – known for films like Barbarian and Weapons – is also producing. Currently, there’s no release date, and details about the plot and casting remain unknown.
Other Horror Movies Now on Tubi
Tubi added some new horror movies to its free streaming service on December 1st, including The Faculty. You can also now stream titles like House At The End Of The Street, Life After Beth, Oculus, and Slither. More recent additions include the 2019 remake of Pet Sematary and the 2022 horror comedy The Menu, which stars Ralph Fiennes, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nicholas Hoult.
