Readers who enjoy the fantasy romance series A Court of Thorns and Roses were upset last year when plans for a TV adaptation fell through. However, there’s good news now – the series may still become a TV show, but with a different network or streaming service.
Sarah J. Maas’s popular book series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, has sold over 13 million copies since its 2015 debut. Due to its success, Hulu announced in 2021 that it would adapt the five-book series into a TV show. Maas was slated to work directly on the show’s development with renowned producer Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind.
Hulu and 20th Television Squashed the Adaptation
Despite a lot of initial excitement, the TV adaptation of A Court of Thorns and Roses was ultimately cancelled. In February 2025, it was announced that 20th Television and Hulu were no longer moving forward with the project, following the departure of key creative force Sarah L. Moore to Sony Pictures Television in 2024. The series, based on a popular book series, had the potential to be Hulu’s first major fantasy hit and possibly compete with Game of Thrones as a leading show in the genre.
Fans will be happy to hear that Sarah J. Maas has hinted at potential plans for a TV adaptation of her book series. During an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she revealed she now owns the rights to the story and is considering bringing it to television. However, she emphasized that she would only move forward with an adaptation if she could remain creatively involved in the process.
I definitely like to be involved and have a good understanding of the creative process, but it’s not about needing to control things. I just genuinely love film and television. I want to contribute to those projects and make sure they’re adapted in a way that both I and the fans will enjoy.
New Installments of the Book Series Are Coming
Sarah J. Maas has exciting news for readers of her A Court of Thorns and Roses series! She announced two new books will be released within the next year. The first is scheduled for October 27, 2026, and the second will follow on January 12, 2027. Maas also hinted at a large and complex storyline that will unfold in these upcoming installments.
Maas described the work as one continuous, expansive story, rather than a series of three books. She emphasized that plotlines won’t be neatly resolved in sections, but will unfold across the entire narrative, similar to expanding all parts of her previous books into one large volume. She chose this approach because it felt like the natural way the story wanted to be told.
A Court of Thorns and Roses centers around Feyre Archeron, a nineteen-year-old hunter, and her experiences in the magical land of Prythian. The story is a sweeping romance between Feyre and a faerie lord, set against a backdrop of an ancient curse that threatens both the faerie and human worlds. Several books in the series have earned recognition, including Goodreads Choice Awards for Best Fantasy and Science Fiction.
