Paramount+ has been adding more movies to its streaming library, and this February brought a classic horror film many viewers might remember fondly. The service already has a strong selection of scary movies, including all the films in the Scream and A Quiet Place series, plus popular favorites like Cloverfield, The Faculty, Rosemary’s Baby, and Sinister. Now, that collection has grown with the addition of a somewhat forgotten horror title.
If you’re looking for a thrilling watch, now’s a great time to check out The Prophecy. This 1995 film, which marked Gregory Widen’s first time directing a feature film, recently became available on Paramount+. The movie kicks off a five-film series and tells the story of a heavenly conflict that descends to Earth. The dangerous angel Gabriel arrives, searching for the most wicked person to help him win a war in Heaven. When a priest-turned-police officer tries to protect a young girl who unknowingly possesses this crucial soul, he gets pulled into this epic battle.
The Prophecy Is a Stylishly Unique Genre Sleeper
Released in the ‘90s, The Prophecy stands out as a truly unique horror film, though opinions on it are divided. While it received mixed reviews (46% from critics and 64% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie offered a fresh, dark take on biblical horror. Instead of the typical battle against demons, it focused on a terrifying war between angels, portraying them not as gentle beings, but as powerful and frightening creatures. This unusual premise played out in a moody, noir-inspired atmosphere, blending detective elements with supernatural action and religious horror. The film’s chilling and memorable dialogue, particularly in scenes featuring Gabriel and Lucifer, further enhanced its impact.
If you’re still hesitant to watch, the incredible cast should be enough to win you over. The actors’ bold and energetic performances lifted the film beyond its limited budget and occasional script issues, turning it into a cult classic. Christopher Walken is a major draw – his portrayal of the Archangel Gabriel is one of his best, blending threat with dark comedy. Even with a short appearance, Viggo Mortensen is captivating as Lucifer, delivering a standout performance as Satan. And Elias Koteas grounds the film with his intense role as Thomas Dagget, a disillusioned ex-priest and cop, providing the emotional core as his character struggles with his beliefs.

On February 1st, Paramount+ added several new movies, including The Prophecy. The streaming service now offers a wide variety of films across many genres, such as Face/Off, Get Rich or Die Tryin’, Grease, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Old Guy, Sixteen Candles, and the classic The Godfather films, plus many more.
