A Forgotten Invincible Spinoff Is Making a Major Return After 20 Years

In a thrilling turn of events, the Expansive Realm expands further, marking the comeback of a franchise that’s been absent for more than two decades. The titan known as Invincible first emerged in 2003, making waves in the world of superheroes, a domain typically ruled by giants like Marvel and DC. The success of the Invincible comic books played a significant role in securing creator Robert Kirkman an adult-animated series on Amazon Prime Video. While Invincible takes center stage, a diverse cast of heroes and villains form the broader Invincible Universe. Now, some of these characters are set to step into the limelight they’ve long deserved.

Robert Kirkman, known for his works such as “Invincible,” “The Walking Dead,” and even “TRANSFORMERS,” revealed at his “Robert Kirkman LIVE at SDCC” event in San Diego Comic-Con that the previously unavailable comic book series, “Capes,” set within Skybound’s Invincible Universe, will be reissued. Originally co-created by Kirkman and artist Mark Englert (famous for “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Hack Slash”), the series will first resurface as a special remastered edition featuring fresh artwork and dialogue from the original creative duo.

As a movie enthusiast and long-time fan of the Invincible Universe, I’m thrilled to share that “Capes” is making a comeback! This iconic series, which hasn’t seen print since its original release two decades ago, will be back with a vengeance.

At San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Kirkman dropped another bombshell about “Capes.” He announced that renowned writer Benito Cereno, a close associate of the Invincible Universe (known for works like “Invincible Presents: Atom Eve” and “Blood & Thunder”), will be teaming up with artist Mark Englert to bring us all-new “Capes” stories. These exciting new chapters are set to debut in 2026, starting with Issue #7. So, get ready, fellow fans, because the world of “Capes” is about to expand even further!

Given the tremendous buzz about everything related to Invincible, I felt it was crucial to bring back the comic series, Capes! Re-reading the original comics brought me immense joy, and we couldn’t stop there. I adore these characters, and it was a blast to debut new ones like Bolt, Kid Thor, and Knockout in Invincible season 3. If fans are clamoring for more Capes, how can we deny them? After all, isn’t that what we love about comics – the opportunity to create new stories and worlds?

Mark Englert expressed his enthusiasm when Robert unexpectedly reached out to him about re-coloring the “Capes” comics. He didn’t anticipate that revisiting the old pages would be such a therapeutic experience, like guiding his younger self to bring the art up to the standard of other outstanding books in the Skybound library. When they decided to fully remaster the art, not just the colors but also adding backgrounds, improving faces and figures, Mark’s love for drawing sequential pages was reignited, and he couldn’t wait to continue. Working with Robert and Benito to create new “Capes” stories has been a long-cherished dream for him!

Benito Cereno expressed his excitement about revisiting the Invincible Universe, focusing on its less-traversed areas. “Invincible” enthusiasts might ponder about the secret missions of Allen the Alien or the Immortal, but it takes a true fanatic to speculate about Battery Bill and Brain Boy’s activities during the Viltrumite War. Fortunately for me, I get the opportunity to fulfill that role, alongside my long-time companion, Mark Englert!

In the description of Capes, it’s stated: “Bolt! Kid Thor! Knock Out! Captain Cosmic! Claire Voyant! Big Brain! Commander Capitalism!” This suggests that Capes Inc is a company that employs your favorite superheroes who safeguard New York City, but only during their work hours. They typically tackle challenges such as Machine Head, Titan, and now face an adversary they weren’t prepared for!
