A Former Superman Actor Wants To Play Batman In The DCU, And It’s The Kind Of Bold Swing That Might Just Work

The DC Universe is currently immersed in the initial phase of its storyline titled “Gods and Monsters“, and one of the most eagerly awaited new DC films in production is “The Brave and the Bold”. In this reboot of Batman, directed by James Gunn and Peter Safran, Bruce Wayne will be joined by his son, Damian Wayne, as well as the extended Bat-Family. However, at present, there’s no word on who might portray the new Batman of Gotham City. Despite this, numerous actors (alongside enthusiastic fans) are speculating about potential candidates for the role. One actor in particular is expressing interest, and he was previously known for his role as Superman.

As a dedicated fan, I had the thrill of attending FAN EXPO Canada where Screen Rant hosted an intriguing panel dubbed “Men of Steel” with various Superman actors. The discussion took an unexpected twist when the panel was queried about Robert Pattinson’s potential fit in the expansive DCU. In all honesty, as someone who’s portrayed Clark Kent on The CW’s Supergirl and Superman & Lois, Tyler Hoechlin, I must confess to having a self-serving reason for doubting that Matt Reeves’ Batman would harmonize well within the larger DCU.

To put it more straightforwardly, I’d rather not participate at the moment as I’ve got my sights set on playing Batman. Rob did an exceptional job, and working with Matt Reeves was a treat. So, I’m content to let them continue their work, and perhaps in the future, there could be a fresh take on the battle between Batman and Superman.

Though Hoechlin might seem “self-centered,” he presents a convincing case. Matt Reeves’ Batman movies continue to occupy their own unique universe, allowing Gunn’s DCU to develop its distinct interpretation of the character. This gives room for a new perspective on Batman, and it appears that the Teen Wolf actor recognizes and seizes this opportunity.

It’s not unreasonable to consider this possibility. Tyler Hoechlin’s tenure as Superman ended in 2024 with the conclusion of Superman & Lois, after four emotional seasons. Yet, his stint provided an opportunity to delve into Clark Kent’s role as a father, which aligns perfectly with the father-son narrative that The Brave and the Bold plans to present. Moreover, given his past roles as brooding, complex characters in the Teen Wolf series, transitioning from Krypton’s last son to Gotham’s vigilante seems rather organic.

Currently, we don’t have any signs of when we might hear about casting updates for The Brave and the Bold, so it seems unlikely that announcements will be made anytime in the near future. However, the ex-MTV star expressing interest does introduce an intriguing twist. Given that Gunn has been bringing back DCEU veterans like Jason Momoa for fresh roles within the DCU, there’s definitely a chance that established characters might reappear in new forms.

Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of Superman was extraordinary, particularly in comparison to the Arrowverse, but his statements echo the same spirit of daring revamp Gunn has brought to the DC Universe. To be honest, the idea of a past Superman, and one as gifted as Hoechlin, donning Batman’s costume for a new era seems like an unconventional casting decision that could potentially prove successful.

All seasons of Superman & Lois are available to stream with an HBO Max subscription.
