A Guide to Kate Hudson’s Blended Family

As a mom of three, Kate Hudson has had her work cut out for her.

In a 2022 interview with the Sunday Times, she spoke about the challenges of motherhood to her three children: 22-year-old Ryder (with ex-husband Chris Robinson), 14-year-old Bingham (with ex Matt Bellamy), and 7-year-old Rani Rose (with fiancé Danny Fujikawa). She explained that she focuses on raising her kids to be good people and make smart choices, just like her own parents did. She emphasized that her parents always made family their top priority, and she grew up feeling secure in that knowledge.

Before Kate Hudson experienced life in a blended family herself, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were the perfect example. They became parental figures to Kate when she was just three years old and played a significant role in raising her and her brother, Oliver Hudson.

Kurt is an “amazing family man who took us on as his own kids,” the 46-year-old said, “which was very important for Oliver and me.”

Kate remembered on the February 19th episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that when she began acting, she didn’t want people to know Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell were her parents. She wanted to succeed based on her own talent, not because of her family connections.

“I was so happy,” she said, “my last name was Hudson.”

However, that wasn’t the reason the actress, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Song Sung Blue, and Oliver refused Kurt’s offer to adopt them as children.

Oliver, 49, remembered on a 2024 episode of his podcast, Sibling Revelry, that the decision likely stemmed from their youth and a lack of understanding of the situation. He said they told him something along the lines of, “We don’t need it, the love is already here.” He firmly believes this man is his father.

Oliver explained that while it took a very long time, he eventually developed a good relationship with his father, musician Bill Hudson.

Kate revealed in 2024 that she had romantic feelings for Bill, who was previously married to Goldie from 1976 to 1982.

“I just don’t overthink it,” she told People. “It’s a 40-year-old issue.”

She primarily focuses on the immediate family she sees every day—her children, parents, and siblings.

“It doesn’t look like a typical family from the outside,” Hudson explained to the Sunday Times, “but inside, we’re thriving. I’ve built a really solid family with my three children, even though they each have different fathers, and it’s a special bond we all share.”

Kate revealed she’d been hoping to develop a deeper connection with Danny for quite a while. She explained that while she values love and giving it to others, she also approaches relationships realistically, taking things one day at a time. She puts a lot of effort into her relationships because she enjoys them, and credits her parents with modeling a healthy, ongoing connection.

Here’s a guide to Kate‘s big family:

Goldie Hawn married actor Gus Trikonis, who appeared in West Side Story, in 1969. They split up in 1973, but Goldie didn’t officially divorce him until late 1975, after becoming engaged to Bill Hudson, a member of the Hudson Brothers band.

Goldie Hawn married Bill Hudson on July 3, 1976, following her divorce. They had two children, Oliver Hudson and Kate Hudson, before separating in 1980 and ultimately divorcing in 1982.

In 2015, Oliver publicly marked Father’s Day with an old photo of himself, Bill, and Kate, accompanied by the caption, “Happy abandonment day…” Bill responded to this post in an interview with the Daily Mail, stating that he no longer considers Oliver or Kate to be his children and requested they stop using the family surname, Hudson. He described Oliver’s post as a deliberate and hurtful attack, and declared that he considers both Oliver and Kate to be estranged from his life.

Oliver revealed on Watch What Happens Live that the public disagreement actually led to a conversation, and he reconnected with Bill after not speaking for twelve years.

In an April 2024 interview on CBS Sunday Morning, Kate stated that while she and Bill didn’t have a close relationship, things were beginning to improve.

She continued, saying she wasn’t sure what would happen, but she didn’t expect anything specific from her father. Her main hope was simply for his happiness.

Bill has three children: Zachary and Emily with his late ex-wife, Cindy Williams, whom he was married to from 1982 to 2000, and Lalania, with Caroline Graham, born in 2006.

Goldie and Bill’s first child was born Sept. 7, 1976.

Similar to his sister Kate, Oliver was raised by their mother and her partner, Kurt Russell. However, in a 2018 interview on Larry King Live, Oliver mentioned he and Bill were making an effort to stay in touch.

I shared a post that was meant to be darkly funny, and it unexpectedly led to a positive outcome for my relationship. We’ve been in touch ever since.

But Kurt will forever be his dad.

Oliver revealed to Us Weekly in December 2025 that the actor from Miracle isn’t his biological father, but shares many of the same habits and personality traits. He described the actor as a very energetic and passionate person, saying he fully invests himself in both love and laughter.

Oliver explained he inherited his mother’s sensitive nature. “I’m a very emotional person—maybe too emotional,” he said, adding that he takes 20 milligrams of Lexapro to help manage it.

Oliver married Erinn Bartlett in 2006, and together they have three children: Wilder, born in 2007; Bodhi, born in 2010; and Rio, born in 2013.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn first connected and fell in love in 1983 while filming the movie Swing Shift, a romantic story set during World War II. They’ve been a couple ever since, and have chosen to remain together without getting married.

I was chatting with Kurt recently, and he shared something really relatable. He and I have both experienced marriage and divorce – he was married to Season Hubley from 1979 to 1983, and he mentioned this during an appearance on TODAY back in 2020. It’s a common experience, and it felt good to connect on that level.

Goldie explained that marriage ‘just didn’t suit either of us.’ While she doesn’t rule out getting married in the future, she felt it wasn’t necessary for them. She believes that, often, marriage has become more about legal and financial matters than about love.

Kate and Oliver, who consider Kurt a father figure and affectionately call him “Pa,” are also very close to Kurt and Season’s son, Boston Russell, who was born on February 16, 1980.

Kate recalled a confusing time when her mother started dating someone new. On her podcast, Sibling Revelry, she explained it felt like a huge moment, wondering if this man could become her father figure. Meeting his son added to the confusion, making her question if she was gaining a brother. It was a lot for her to process as a child.

Boston generally keeps to himself, but he does occasionally show up to support his family, like when his parents, Kurt and Goldie, were honored with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.

Kurt and Goldie’s only child together, Wyatt Russell, was born July 10, 1986.

Oh my gosh, did you know that the incredible star of Thunderbolts actually used to be a professional hockey player over in Europe?! It’s true! He was amazing on the ice, but sadly, a series of injuries forced him to retire in 2010. I was so bummed! But honestly, it’s awesome that he then stepped up and joined his family’s business full-time. He’s just so talented at everything!

Wyatt married Meredith Hagner in 2019, and they have two sons together. Buddy Prine was born in March 2021, and their second son, Boone Joseph, was born on February 13, 2024.

Becoming a parent gave Wyatt a new understanding of his own parents, he shared with People magazine in April 2025. He realized they simply wanted him to be happy and live a good life – which is now all he wants for his own children. He believes his parents likely feel the same way about him.

Pretty much.

Goldie shared with Australian Women’s Weekly in 2022 that her children and grandchildren are her greatest source of pride. She described being a grandmother as a wonderful and joyful experience, emphasizing how much she values family.

Kate had her first child on January 7, 2004, with her husband at the time, Chris Robinson. They split up in 2006 and officially divorced in October 2007, but have maintained a friendly relationship as they co-parent their child.

Kate explained to The Times Online in 2009 that while her relationship with the Black Crowes singer had changed over time, they would always be connected. She felt they were meant to be parents together, and their son would keep them linked for life.

In February 2026, Chris announced that his son, Ryder, would be graduating from NYU in May, expressing immense pride.

Chris shared with People magazine that their son seems to be considering a career in acting, but he’s also incredibly talented musically. Chris mentioned he’s a very skilled singer and guitar player who is passionate about music.

The musician also described him as a remarkable young man, saying he’s charismatic, intelligent, and good-looking, with a bright future ahead of him.

In April 2025, Ryder celebrated his two-year anniversary with girlfriend Piper Lacy on Instagram. He had previously been in a relationship with Iris Apatow.

Kate and musician Matt Bellamy welcomed their son, Bingham, on July 9, 2011. They named him after both Matt’s mother, Marilyn Bingham, and Kate’s father, Bing Russell. Although they became engaged, the couple announced their split in December 2014.

Breakups are always difficult, but you have a choice in how you deal with them,” Kate explained in a 2015 interview with Allure. “If things had worked out between Matt and me, we’d still be together. We simply wanted different things for our futures, so we decided to go our separate ways. That doesn’t rule out the possibility of finding a way to co-parent and create the best situation for our children, though.”

Matt and Elle Evans got married in 2019 and have two children: Lovella, born in June 2020, and George, born in May 2024.

In a 2021 interview with Women’s Health, Kate shared something her husband, Matt, said that resonated with her: “He wanted to ensure their son, Bing, felt like he was gaining, not losing, through their changes.” Kate believes this shared focus on protecting Bing has actually strengthened their relationship, as they both prioritize each other’s well-being.

Based on what his mom has told me, Bingham really loves playing the drums. He’s also a baseball player and seems to be getting interested in the world of finance.

Kate recently shared on Late Night With Seth Meyers that her son is already investing in the stock market. She explained he stays informed about current events and understands the details of stocks and bonds, which she finds remarkable. She believes it will be fascinating to see how his financial knowledge develops as he gets older.

Kate began dating musician Danny Fujikawa in 2016. They had a daughter, Rani, on October 2, 2018. Danny, who had been a friend for years, proposed in 2021.

In a 2022 interview with the Sunday Times, Kate shared her hopes for the future, saying, “I’d love to get married someday!” However, she also explained they weren’t rushing into it. With everything else going on, she didn’t want the added stress of wedding planning right now, but she is looking forward to it. She described a sweet moment from the night before, when her partner was looking at old videos of himself and their daughter, Rani, which she found incredibly touching. Kate emphasized how wonderful he is as both a father and a stepfather.

Kate Hudson, the actress known for Almost Famous, said she feels more able to be there for her son Ryder now than she did when he was first born, as she was 24 years old at the time of his birth.

I have a really special bond with Ryder because we’ve known each other since he was a baby. Becoming a mother to him was a huge part of my own growth as a person, and it was a deliberate choice we made. It felt natural to start a family, and we were both very close. I took him with me everywhere and didn’t start leaving him for long periods until he was two years old. He didn’t even begin school until he was ten, which is different from how I approached things with my other children – I’m generally much more focused on schedules and structure with them.

Outside of school, Rani travels the world with her parents. In 2024, she appeared in a SKIMS holiday ad campaign alongside her family – including her parents, brothers, uncle Oliver’s family, and grandmother Goldie.
