
Disney’s classic films are getting a spooky makeover. As the copyrights on these stories expire, filmmakers are turning beloved characters and tales into horror movies. Following the success of films like The Mouse Trap and Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, another well-known 84-year-old Disney movie has been reimagined as a horror film, and is now available to stream on Peacock.
On March 27th, Bambi: The Reckoning premiered on Peacock. This is the fourth film in the Twisted Childhood Universe, and it’s a horror take on the classic story of Bambi, originally a 1923 novel and later a beloved Disney movie. Instead of a heartwarming tale, this version focuses on the trauma of Bambi’s mother’s death, portraying Bambi as a mutated deer seeking revenge. After his mother is killed, he hunts down a mother and son who are left stranded in the woods following a car accident.
Bambi: The Reckoning Is the Best Entry in the Twisted Childhood Universe Yet
The Twisted Childhood Universe has gained a reputation for turning beloved Disney stories into scary horror films, but many have criticized these movies as unoriginal and simply made to profit from existing popularity. However, Bambi: The Reckoning seems to be a turning point. With a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s the first film in the series to receive a positive critical response, significantly outperforming Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey II, which scored 47%.
With Bambi: The Reckoning, the Twisted Childhood Universe takes a step forward, moving beyond simple slasher films into a more complex and meaningful eco-horror experience. This installment is noticeably more mature and serious than previous TCU entries, combining intense creature-feature violence with themes of grief, trauma, and nature’s retribution. The film reimagines Bambi as a monstrous, vengeful deer driven by the death of his mother, and features a compelling creature design that transforms the beloved character into a truly frightening presence. It also delivers impressive practical effects and violent scenes that align with the tone of the Poohniverse. While the TCU has had mixed results, Bambi: The Reckoning successfully combines childhood nostalgia with visceral horror, making it a genuinely enjoyable monster movie.
What’s New on Peacock?
The horror film Bambi: The Reckoning is now available to stream on Peacock, joining a large collection of other movies added in March. Peacock launched a big wave of titles on March 1st, including horror favorites like Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th – Part III, and most of the Leprechaun series. Other films added at the same time included Beekeeper, Death Race, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Throughout March, Peacock continued to add more content, with titles like Fast X, Wicked: For Good, and The Wild Robot also becoming available.
