HBO’s latest installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire universe is widely considered its best work to date. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, though more focused and less expansive than Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, has consistently delivered high quality. The newest episode, released ahead of schedule to avoid competition with the Super Bowl, is a hit, achieving a 9.7 rating on IMDB – the highest score any episode of House of the Dragon has received.
Based on stories by George R.R. Martin, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Ser Duncan the Tall, a wandering knight, and Egg, a prince who disguises himself as a squire. The story begins when Dunk enters a tournament at Ashford Meadows, unaware of Egg’s true identity as a Targaryen prince. The latest episode, “Seven,” shows Dunk assembling an unlikely group of allies after defending the principles of chivalry against a Targaryen prince. Many fans believe this series understands Martin’s world better than HBO’s other adaptations.
What Makes A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms So Successful?

Honestly, I think this new show just feels better than even House of the Dragon did. Maybe it’s because the first few episodes are so genuinely heartfelt. But I really believe it’s because the creators are sticking much closer to the source material – the books! That’s what Game of Thrones started doing less and less, and we all know how that ended – with what many consider the worst series finale ever. Everyone’s saying the reviews are amazing, especially for the latest episode, and I think it’s because of that faithfulness and the emotional connection it creates.
Many viewers are finding the new series a refreshing change of pace from its predecessors. One IMDB user noted that it’s more engaging because it focuses on character interactions rather than constant action – just a flawed hero, a clever child, and the consequences of their choices. It’s a slower, more character-driven fantasy with a surprising amount of heart. Viewers appreciate the focus on honor, realistic mistakes, and meaningful repercussions. Many feel it captures the spirit of the early Game of Thrones seasons, something House of the Dragon didn’t quite achieve for some, with one viewer stating they couldn’t even finish the second season of HotD but are already hooked on this new series.
With Ira Parker and Sarah Adina Smith leading the way, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms seems to be in excellent hands. Considering the show is likely to continue for at least two more seasons – assuming George R.R. Martin finishes the remaining novellas – fans can look forward to plenty more of Dunk and Egg’s adventures in the world of Westeros.
