A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Is Now So Close to Telling the Targaryen Story I’ve Been Dreaming Of

The latest episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Season 1, Episode 5, brings us closer to the possibility of a great Targaryen-focused spin-off series. Titled “In the Name of the Mother,” the episode centers on a trial by combat featuring Ser Duncan the Tall and his team against one led by Prince Aerion Targaryen. However, the episode spends more time exploring the past, showing flashbacks of a young Dunk growing up in the rough neighborhood of Flea Bottom.

The story really kicks off with the death of Dunk’s pal, Rafe, and how he’s saved by Ser Arlan of Pennytree, but honestly, what’s happening around that is just as compelling. It starts with Dunk and Rafe robbing a guy on what looks a lot like the Redgrass Field – the site of the final battle in the Blackfyre Rebellion. Though it’s not exactly red or grassy, the details strongly suggest it’s connected to that rebellion, and I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of that history unfold as the story goes on.

A Blackfyre Rebellion Show Would Be Great, But A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Could Do It Differently

The Blackfyre Rebellion was a war fought over control of the Iron Throne. It began when Daemon Blackfyre, an acknowledged but illegitimate son of King Aegon IV Targaryen, tried to take the throne (Aegon IV was also the father of Daeron II Targaryen, featured in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms). The rebellion involved battles throughout Westeros and ended with Daemon and his sons being killed at Redgrass Field. That’s why the shopkeeper in Episode 5 says, “Daemon’s rebellion is over.”

I’ve always believed this story would translate incredibly well to television. It has all the elements of a great show – family rivalries, political scheming, interesting characters, and dramatic, large-scale events. There are actually five different Blackfyre Rebellions, which means it could even become an anthology series with multiple seasons, if HBO decided to pursue it. In fact, they might already be hinting at this storyline in their current programming.

The Blackfyre Rebellion is a really important part of the story in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. It was a major event for House Targaryen that happened relatively recently before the main series, much like how Robert’s Rebellion continues to affect events in Game of Thrones because of all the people who were involved. The rebellion is explored even more in the second and third books of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, which opens up possibilities for flashbacks in the show – maybe even showing characters who have already died. When asked about this in a recent Reddit Q&A, showrunner Ira Parker hinted that we might see this happen, saying, “Stay tuned.”

Now that the show has finally depicted events from the Blackfyre Rebellion, it makes sense to explore this period further. Introducing characters like Baelor, Maekar, and Ser Arlan through these scenes could be a way to keep them involved in the story even when they aren’t central to the main plot. While a dedicated spinoff would be ideal, continuing to showcase these events, as seen in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is a great alternative, especially considering how well Parker and his team have adapted the source material so far.

The season one finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be available on HBO and HBO Max starting Sunday, February 22nd, at 10 p.m.
