While A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could have a satisfying conclusion, it’s taking its time getting there. With only one season released and a second on the way, discussing how it will end might seem early. However, considering the controversial ending of Game of Thrones, HBO should already be planning the series’ finale. House of the Dragon is set to conclude after four seasons in 2028, so what about the planned length for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?
Ira Parker, the showrunner for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has talked about a long-term vision for the series – potentially lasting up to 15 seasons. The idea is to run the show for 4 or 5 seasons, pause for about ten years, then return for another run, and finally conclude with a final set of seasons after another decade-long break. While incredibly ambitious – it would take at least 30 years to finish – Parker believes this approach would allow the show and its two central characters to receive the satisfying conclusion they deserve.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Can’t End With The 3rd Book

Currently, three stories have been released in George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series, and the show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on these. Martin intends to write many more, potentially up to twelve stories in total. This creates a potential issue for the TV show, similar to what happened with Game of Thrones: the show might move ahead of the source material.
Fortunately, adapting these stories feels much more manageable, even if George R.R. Martin doesn’t write any additional Dunk and Egg tales. He and his co-writer, Kevin Parker, work well together and intend to thoroughly outline everything for upcoming seasons. Because these books are shorter and less complicated – with fewer characters, storylines, and settings – it should be a less daunting process than adapting Game of Thrones.
Everything looks promising, as long as HBO decides to continue the show beyond the current plans. It would be a letdown if the series ended after only adapting the third book. Luckily, The Mystery Knight is a great installment, and with positive reviews and strong viewership, a third season of the show seems likely – and should be excellent.
This is simply another chapter in Dunk and Egg’s ongoing story, and it doesn’t feel like a natural conclusion. Considering what we know from the history of Game of Thrones, their adventures are far from over, and it would be disappointing to stop here.
A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Needs To End With The Tragedy At Summerhall (Major SPOILERS Ahead)

Unlike Game of Thrones, we have a general idea of how the story of Dunk and Egg will unfold, thanks to George R.R. Martin’s detailed worldbuilding. Over time, their luck will shift: Egg eventually becomes King Aegon V Targaryen, and Dunk rises to become the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. Egg rules Westeros for more than twenty years, until a tragic event known as the Tragedy of Summerhall occurs in 259 AC – fifty years after the start of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Some of this remains shrouded in mystery, but the key points are:
- Egg’s reign had upset many lords of Westeros, due to him giving greater rights and protections to the smallfolk (no doubt inspired by the people he and Dunk met on their adventures.
- There was also an increasing concern regarding a band of nine outlaws in Essos, who were styling themselves as kings in their own right.
- Because of all this, Egg thought the only way to truly establish a firmer control was with dragons, and seemingly tried to hatch a dragon’s egg at the Targaryen residence of Summerhall, with wildfire and pyromancers involved.
- This caused a great blaze that grew out of control, killing several people in attendance, including Egg, his eldest son (named Duncan), and perhaps Dunk, too.
- Dunk played a part in saving the lives of others, including Princess Rhaella Targaryen, who then immediately gave birth to a son, one Rhaegar Targaryen.
For a long time, fans believed Dunk died at Summerhall. However, recent comments from the actor who plays Egg, Dexter Sol Ansell, hinted that might not be true. He shared that George R.R. Martin told him Dunk actually lives. Whether this is accurate remains to be seen, but it would be a fitting conclusion to the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series.
This is the most important and impactful moment of their lives, and it would make for a truly spectacular scene. Because it’s such a crucial turning point for both the characters and the history of Westeros, it feels like the only fitting way for the show to conclude. However, the journey to get to that point is a significant challenge in itself.
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere on HBO and HBO Max in 2027. You can currently watch all six episodes of the first season on HBO Max.
