Unlike Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offers a fresh perspective by changing both the overall feel and the scope of the story, and by focusing on a different character. Instead of following lords and ladies, the story centers on Dunk, a young man who grew up poor in the city slums. While familiar noble houses like the Targaryens, Baratheons, Lannisters, Tyrells, and Tullys still play roles, their involvement varies throughout the story.
House Stark is arguably the most prominent family from Game of Thrones not featured in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, largely due to their remote location in the North. Winterfell is so far from the tourney at Ashford in the Reach that a journey there would take weeks, making it impractical to attend. Furthermore, the North doesn’t have many knights – most people there follow the Old Gods instead of the Faith of the Seven – so their lack of participation is understandable. However, the story will eventually bring Dunk and Egg into contact with the Starks.
House Stark’s Future In A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Explained

George R.R. Martin envisions a total of twelve Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, though only three are currently available. He’s shared limited details about the future stories, but one, tentatively titled The She-Wolves of Winterfell, was originally planned as the fourth installment. However, The Village Hero, set in the Riverlands, might be written first. If Martin writes The She-Wolves of Winterfell next, it could serve as the basis for Season 4 of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—hopefully, the show will get that far!
The She-Wolves are a group of mothers and grandmothers from the North, likely including Lady Lorra Royce, the wife of Lord Beron Stark of Winterfell, and the widows of previous Stark lords. This group’s formation is foreshadowed in the third Dunk and Egg novel, The Mystery Knight, where Dunk reveals his intention to travel North to Winterfell and serve Beron Stark, who is preparing for war against Dagon Greyjoy – a conflict that will bring the Stark and Lannister families together.
It’s more probable that Dunk and Egg arrive on the scene after the fighting has already finished. George R.R. Martin hinted in 2006 about a story idea involving Beron Greyjoy, who was fatally wounded in the battle. This suggests the story will focus on the power struggles following his death, and Dunk and Egg will somehow get caught up in them. This scenario aligns better with the story’s working title and emphasis on strong female characters, and feels more in line with the typical Dunk and Egg adventures than a large-scale battle against the Greyjoys.
There’s a chance we might see the character Old Nan in the new series. She was already around 100 years old during the first season of Game of Thrones, meaning she’d still be alive during this time period. Fans have long speculated about a connection between Old Nan (and possibly Dunk) and a vision Bran Stark has in the book A Dance with Dragons, even suggesting Hodor might be related. The new season, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, could finally confirm or disprove these theories.
Will House Stark Be The Focus Of Other Game Of Thrones Spinoffs?

As a huge fan of Game of Thrones, I always felt the story really belonged to the Starks. They were the characters you couldn’t help but cheer for, and their journey felt like the heart of the whole series – it began with them and, ultimately, ended with them. That’s why I’m a little disappointed that they haven’t been central to the new shows. House of the Dragon has only touched on their story so far, and while they’ll be more involved in the Dance of the Dragons, they won’t be the focus. It seems like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will mostly be the same way – the Starks won’t be major players in most of those seasons.
I’m really excited about all the new shows they’re planning! There are a bunch in development, like one about Aegon’s Conquest focusing on the Targaryens, and another about Corlys Velaryon, ‘The Sea Snake,’ plus a story about Princess Nymeria and ‘10,000 Ships.’ Honestly, I’m hoping we get to see the Starks return too. I heard they were thinking about a Jon Snow series, and maybe they’ll revisit that. But even more exciting is the possibility of an Arya Stark show! Apparently, it would follow her as she explores what lies West of Westeros. If that happens, it would be amazing to see the Starks back in a major way, and I’d be so happy!
The second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming to HBO and HBO Max in 2027. You can currently watch all six episodes of the first season on HBO Max.
