A Long Lost Godzilla Villain Returns This Year

This year has been big for monster fans! Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters brought the MonsterVerse back with the familiar theme of scientists tracking colossal creatures. And in 2026, Godzilla Minus Zero will arrive in theaters, following the success of Godzilla Minus One. But that’s not all – a major villain from Godzilla’s past is set to return this fall. This creepy monster hasn’t been seen since Godzilla: Final Wars, and a new movie is gearing up to bring it back into the action.

Godzilla Fest, a yearly celebration of everything Godzilla, is returning to Japan this November. The event looks back at Godzilla’s history and often gives hints about future projects. A key part of the festival is a new short film featuring a classic Godzilla enemy battling the King of the Monsters once again. This year’s film will bring back Monster X, a frightening villain from the 2004 movie Godzilla: Final Wars, after decades of absence. Titled Fest Godzilla II: Shinjuku Burning, the short promises a challenging fight for Godzilla and a return to a beloved classic villain.

Not to Be Mistaken With Titan X

If you watched season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, you may remember Titan X, a powerful sea monster that posed a major threat to the MonsterVerse. Titan X originally appeared in Final Wars and was created by an alien species called the Xiliens, who come from Planet X. What made Titan X so dangerous was its incredibly strong, bone-like body, and its ability to transform into Keizer Ghidorah, a more powerful version of Ghidorah. It could also fly and shoot energy and gravity beams, so bringing this monster back to life in the upcoming short film will be a real challenge for the filmmakers.

To create a new “Burning Godzilla” suit for an upcoming short film, the filmmakers have launched a crowdfunding campaign. The campaign, which will run through the Japanese platform CAMPFIRE and be open to fans in 82 countries, aims to build a suit for Godzilla himself – previous campaigns funded suits for other monsters. The short film is scheduled to be released in June. You can learn more and contribute to the campaign by clicking here.
