A revival of Miami Vice is gaining momentum, with reports suggesting an Academy Award nominee is in talks to star alongside Michael B. Jordan. This new version of the 1980s hit series will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for Top Gun: Maverick. News surfaced yesterday that the actor from Sinners is being considered to play Ricardo Tubbs, a role previously held by Philip Michael Thomas and Jamie Foxx.
According to Deadline, Austin Butler is a potential lead for the role of James “Sonny” Crockett. Butler received an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the 2022 film Elvis and recently appeared as Feyd-Ruatha in Dune: Part Two (2024). The character of Sonny Crockett has been played before by Don Johnson in the original television series and Colin Farrell in the 2006 movie Miami Vice. While nothing is confirmed yet, discussions are progressing positively.

Earlier reports indicated Glen Powell might appear alongside Michael B. Jordan in a new Miami Vice movie. It’s unclear why Austin Butler is now the leading contender, or if Powell was ever seriously considered. However, Butler is currently a strong possibility for the role. He’s presently committed to star with Jeremy Allen White in Enemies, a crime thriller directed by Henry Dunham and produced by A24. According to Deadline, filming for Miami Vice is expected to begin in 2026.
Austin Butler began his acting career with roles in shows like Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, Switched at Birth, and The Carrie Diaries. He gained recognition for playing Tex Watson in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but truly became a star when he was cast as Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic Elvis. The film was a huge success, earning nearly $288.7 million globally and receiving several Academy Award nominations. Since then, Butler has continued to choose compelling projects with talented directors, appearing in films like Dune: Part Two, The Bikeriders, Eddington, and Caught Stealing, solidifying his status as a leading actor.
Universal Pictures is working to update Miami Vice for modern audiences who may not be familiar with the original show. They’re hoping the popular actors involved, like Butler and Michael B. Jordan, will attract viewers – highlighting how important star power is for successful reboots. The studio has scheduled the new Miami Vice film for release on August 6, 2027, a prime weekend usually reserved for major summer blockbusters. Previous films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, and Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw all opened on that same weekend and were huge hits. Universal is betting that this film’s talented cast and director can achieve similar success with Miami Vice.
