The last few years have been great for Marvel fans, with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) growing and bringing more characters to life in movies and shows from Disney and Sony. While films like Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Deadpool & Wolverine have been huge hits, not every Marvel project has succeeded. Recently, one film performed poorly, resulting in about $100 million in losses. After leaving Netflix, that movie is now available on another streaming service.
The movie Madame Web, a spin-off from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe starring Dakota Johnson, is now streaming on Disney+ after leaving Netflix on November 14th. The film, which tells the origin story of the Marvel character Cassandra Webb—a woman with the power to see the future—was a critical and commercial failure. It follows Cassandra as she develops her clairvoyant abilities and fights to save three young women from a dangerous enemy.
Madame Web Became a Surprise Streaming Hit, and It Could Do It Again on Disney+
Movies that don’t do well in theaters can often find an audience online, and that’s exactly what happened with Madame Web. Despite disappointing at the box office – earning only $100 million worldwide and receiving a low 10% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes – the film became a surprise hit on Netflix when it started streaming in May 2024. It quickly became the most-watched movie on the platform and became Sony’s biggest streaming success of the year, even outperforming films that had more successful runs in cinemas, like Deadpool & Wolverine.
The recent streaming views for Madame Web aren’t because the movie is actually good. While it might be enjoyably bad for some, the high numbers are mostly due to it becoming a popular meme and spreading quickly on social media, which made people curious enough to watch.
Now that Madame Web is available for streaming, it has the potential to become a big hit online. Disney+ viewers have repeatedly shown they love Marvel and superhero content, and these titles often perform very well when they debut. For example, Thunderbolts quickly became popular on Disney+ after not doing well in theaters.
Is Madame Web Worth Watching?
Okay, so if you just want something fun and mindless to watch with a bucket of popcorn, Madame Web might do the trick. Let’s be real, it’s not going to win any awards – it’s actually pretty low-ranked among superhero flicks. But if you go in expecting a bit of a cheesy, enjoyably-bad movie, you might actually have a good time. It definitely has its flaws – the story isn’t great, there isn’t a ton of action, and the characters aren’t super complex. However, I really liked the found-family aspect, and it offers a pretty different take on how a superhero gets their start.
As a movie fan, I was excited to see that Madame Web is now available to stream on Disney+! They’ve added it alongside a bunch of other stuff too, like Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Animation, a behind-the-scenes look at the Avatar films called Fire and Water: Making the Avatar Films, and even a fun LEGO Marvel special, LEGO Marvel Avengers: Strange Tails.
