A Minecraft Movie Sequel Squared Gets Official Title Set To Release In 2027

Warner Bros. is making another Minecraft movie, continuing the story from last year’s popular film, A Minecraft Movie.

The title of the next Minecraft movie was announced in a joint Instagram post with the film studios and Minecraft itself. The post playfully asked fans if they were ready for another adventure, revealing the sequel would be called “A Minecraft Movie Squared!”

The 2025 film, A Minecraft Movie, is based on the incredibly popular video game of the same name. The story centers around a group of unlikely heroes who find themselves transported into the world of Minecraft through a strange portal. They join forces with Steve, a skilled builder played by Jack Black. The movie was a huge success, earning close to $1 billion worldwide. Because of this success, Warner Bros. Discovery has greenlit a sequel, and filming is currently underway in New Zealand.

Jared Hess is directing the next installment, and Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge are all set to reprise their roles. Matt Berry will also be back, though his part hasn’t been revealed yet. Joining the cast is Kirsten Dunst.

Okay, so I just saw the news – Matt Berry is coming back, though they’re keeping his role a secret for now. But the big thing is Kirsten Dunst is going to be playing Alex in the Minecraft movie! They revealed it during the TwitchCon livestream with a little behind-the-scenes look, and she’s basically the female version of Steve. Pretty cool, right?

Mary Parent, Kayleen Walters, Roy Lee, Cale Boyter, Torfi Frans Ólafsson, Eric McLeod, Jason Momoa, and the late Jill Messick are producing the next installment. Jen Conroy, Jay Ashenfelter, Jon Berg, Brian Mendoza, and Jonathan Spaihts are serving as executive producers.

Warner Bros. revealed the title of the next Minecraft movie and also started a contest called The Minecraft Movie Build Challenge. Fans can enter their own Minecraft creations for a chance to see them in the movie or during the closing credits.

From May 30th to June 14th, fans can participate in a challenge to unlock an exclusive Builder Cape on TikTok, Minecraft, and Twitch. The contest is open to anyone 16 years or older. You can submit your builds between May 30th and June 8th at 11:59 PM PT, and the overall competition will continue through July 6th.

A Minecraft Movie: Squared is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 23, 2027.
