The popular series Peaky Blinders concluded with a feature-length film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, on Netflix last month. Now, fans can enjoy another work from one of the show’s actors: a lesser-known thriller now available on Peacock. Peacock is constantly adding to its movie library, and this month, along with the Blade films and the new series The Miniature Wife, they’ve included a 2005 psychological thriller that’s worth watching.
Before Cillian Murphy blew us all away as Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders, he was already showing his knack for playing complex, captivating characters. I recently rediscovered Red Eye, a Wes Craven thriller from 2005 where he plays Jackson Rippner, a really charismatic but scary guy who basically forces a hotel manager, Lisa Reisert (played brilliantly by Rachel McAdams), to help him with a dangerous plan on a transatlantic flight. When it first came out, it was seen as a solid, fun thriller, but over the years, it’s really gained a following – it’s become one of those underappreciated cult favorites that I think more people should check out. It started streaming on Peacock on April 1st, so I revisited it recently and was reminded how good it is!
Cillian Murphy Teamed Up With Wes Craven for an Edge-Of-Your-Seat Thriller With Red Eye
For a truly suspenseful thriller, check out Red Eye on Peacock. While different from Wes Craven’s usual horror style – it skips the gore and supernatural scares – the movie is still incredibly tense. Craven expertly builds anxiety throughout the 85-minute flight, and the tight setting of the plane makes it almost unbearable. Rachel McAdams and Cillian Murphy brilliantly play off each other, bringing both vulnerability and a chilling presence to their cat-and-mouse game, making the high-stakes situation on the plane captivating and effective.
Despite not getting much attention when it came out, Red Eye is a surprisingly good film for both director Wes Craven and actor Cillian Murphy. It’s a really tense thriller that deserves another look. Critics loved it, giving it an 80% ‘Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes – one of Craven’s highest and a top score for Murphy. While audiences weren’t quite as enthusiastic, they still gave it a positive 64% score, calling it a gripping and exciting political thriller – a great example of a well-made ‘B movie’.
What’s New on Peacock?
While Red Eye is now available on Peacock, it’s just one of many recent additions. This month, the streaming service has added films like Airplane!, the entire Blade trilogy, Dead Poets Society, Face/Off, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. And there’s more to come in April, with Nosferatu arriving on April 21st and the original Five Nights at Freddy’s on April 26th.
