Fans waiting for Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse have a treat coming soon: a special preview will be available on Prime Video in just two weeks. Prime Video has quickly become a leading streaming service, known for its high-quality original shows like The Expanse, Fleabag, Reacher, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. These shows demonstrate the platform’s ability to deliver a wide range of compelling content.
Prime Video has made a splash in the superhero world with popular shows like The Boys, The Tick, and Invincible, each offering a unique style and appealing to different viewers. Now, they’re expanding their superhero lineup with Spider-Noir, a live-action series created by Oren Uziel and starring Nicolas Cage. While based on a Marvel character, Spider-Noir takes place in a separate universe connected to Sony’s Spider-Man films.
Prime Video’s Spider-Noir is a unique addition to the world of Marvel shows. It differs from recent series with its distinctive mood, style, and the option to watch in striking black and white or vibrant color. Combining elements of crime thrillers, drama, mystery, and action, Spider-Noir will debut on Prime Video on May 27th as a lead-in to the character’s upcoming movie appearance – but there’s a surprising element to that return.
Spider-Noir Is Leading His Own Show Before His Return In Beyond The Spider-Verse
Spider-Noir is set in 1930s New York City, presenting a different take on the Spider-Man story. It follows Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, as a weary and troubled private investigator trying to make ends meet. He used to be a superhero, and while he’s currently stepped away from that life, he remains the only one in the city.
A new case compels Reilly to become Spider-Man again, as he remains the city’s sole superhero, though not the only one with powers. The series Spider-Noir introduces familiar faces from the Spider-Man comics, including Cat Hardy (played by Li Jun Li), Flint Marko/Sandman (Jack Huaton), and Lonnie Lincoln/Tombstone (Abraham Popoola). This marks Spider-Noir’s debut in live-action television, preceding his appearance in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Spider-Noir first appeared in the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with Nicolas Cage providing the voice for the character. He made a brief, silent appearance in Across the Spider-Verse and is scheduled to return in Beyond the Spider-Verse, again voiced by Cage. While Beyond the Spider-Verse isn’t due out until June 18, 2027, a separate project featuring Spider-Noir will be released beforehand to help audiences get acquainted with the character – and there’s a surprising element to this plan.
Despite Their Connections, Spider-Noir’s TV Show Isn’t Part Of The Spider-Verse Movies
Despite Nicolas Cage voicing Spider-Noir in both Spider-Verse films and the new Prime Video series, these are completely separate characters. The Spider-Noir from Into the Spider-Verse is a black-and-white version of Peter Parker from the 1930s. However, the Spider-Noir appearing in the Prime Video show is actually Ben Reilly, a different character known as Scarlet Spider and Spider-Carnage in the comic books.
Uziel explained that the show’s creators opted for Ben Reilly instead of Peter Parker as the main character to better match the show’s overall feel. Parker is strongly linked to a younger, high school experience, while Reilly is a more adult figure (according to Esquire). This change also gives the Prime Video series Spider-Noir more freedom, as it isn’t tied to the storylines of the Spider-Verse films. However, Spider-Noir can still introduce audiences to the character and build anticipation before Peter Parker returns in future movies.
Whether Spider-Noir will launch a new corner of the Marvel multiverse on Prime Video remains to be seen, but for now, it offers a fresh take on a lesser-known Spider-Man and a fun opportunity to watch Nicolas Cage play a superhero.
