With the release of Scream 7 just around the corner, now’s the time to check out a lesser-known horror film starring one of the Scream actors. The cast of the popular slasher series – including Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette – have all appeared in many other well-known projects like The Craft, Friends, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Matthew Lillard, another Scream star, has been in hits like Scooby-Doo and Five Nights at Freddy’s. This year, one of the actors from the recent Scream films starred in a surprisingly good horror comedy that’s leaving HBO Max soon.
I really enjoyed Melissa Barrera in the latest Scream, and I recently checked out her film Your Monster on HBO Max. It’s a sweet story about an actress, Laura, who’s going through a tough time – she’s dealing with a cancer diagnosis and a breakup – and goes back home. Things get interesting when she finds a monster in her closet! It sounds crazy, but it actually helps her rediscover who she is, chase her ambitions, and deal with some really deep emotions. It’s been available on HBO Max for a while, but it’s leaving the platform on January 23rd, so if it sounds like something you’d like, you should watch it before it’s gone!
Melissa Barrera’s Your Monster Is a Perfect Valentine’s Day Horror Movie
It’s terrible timing that Your Monster is leaving HBO Max. With Scream 7 coming out next month – and unfortunately without Jenna Ortega returning as Sam – and Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the removal feels especially bad. Your Monster is actually a great choice for a Valentine’s Day horror movie, balancing sweet romance with real scares and being a genuinely good film overall.
This film reimagines Beauty and the Beast as a darkly funny and unconventional modern story. Instead of a magical castle, it focuses on Laura’s personal battles, and the ‘Beast’ represents her inner turmoil. While offering the familiar comfort of romantic comedies as Laura and the Monster connect, the movie blends those elements with genuine horror. The Monster isn’t just a creature, but a symbol of Laura’s hidden anger and past trauma. Your Monster builds suspense through a constant sense of dread, occasional shocks, and moments of intense violence.
Despite receiving positive reviews and a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 79% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (with an even higher 85% audience score), the independent film Your Monster hasn’t found a wide audience. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and had a small release in theaters, but didn’t gain much popularity, likely due to its low budget and independent nature.
Where to Stream Your Monster After It Leaves HBO Max?
If you’re interested in watching Your Monster, now’s the time! It’s leaving HBO Max on January 23rd and isn’t currently available on any other streaming service. For the time being, after it leaves HBO Max, you’ll need to rent or buy it online. While it might reappear on streaming around Valentine’s Day in February, there are no guarantees about its availability.
