A Six-Year-Old Line of Dialogue Might Explain Captain Marvel’s Absence From Avengers: Doomsday (& I’m Not Happy)

As a huge Marvel fan, I have to say the cast list for Doomsday is seriously exciting! Seeing Robert Downey Jr. back after all this time – it’s been since 2019! – is a dream come true. But it’s not just him; James Marsden, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn are all dusting off their superhero suits after a long break. Still, while it’s amazing to see these veterans return, Doomsday really feels like it’s handing the reins over to a new generation of heroes. It seems like they’re the ones who will be facing the biggest challenges from here on out, and I’m so ready to see them take charge.

Many heroes, like Sam Wilson and Shuri, have been preparing for their next big role for a while now. However, some expected players are notably absent from the current storyline. While Spider-Man’s absence is understandable, the lack of Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel is surprising. It’s possible the MCU will use a past line from Captain Marvel to explain her disappearance, but even though it might seem logical, it’s likely to disappoint fans – including me.

Captain Marvel Is Always Looking Out for the Little Guy in the MCU

Carol Danvers finds herself caught in a war between the Kree and Skrull empires. After losing her memories, she initially fights alongside the Kree, using powers gained from the Tesseract to carry out their plans. However, she soon realizes the truth and joins forces with a young Nick Fury to help the Skrulls. By the end of Captain Marvel, she sets off into space to find a new home for the Skrulls and offer her help wherever it’s needed. She spends over two decades traveling through space before receiving a call from Fury, an old friend.

When Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, arrives on Earth, the Avengers aren’t exactly thrilled to have her – they mostly just want to use her power to defeat Thanos. After that battle, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor all step back. However, Black Widow attempts to rebuild, creating a team to address universal problems. Carol offers to take on missions in space, and when her friends ask about her return, she explains that the issues facing Earth are happening across the galaxy. This highlights her belief that all planets deserve equal attention, which is admirable. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be keeping her distant for story reasons, and we could see this happen again in future films like Doomsday.

The MCU Thinks Captain Marvel Is Too Powerful

Look, as we saw in Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel is one of the only heroes who can really go up against Thanos – he practically had to cheat to win! Everyone says she feels responsible for helping others, and that’s great, but it feels like Marvel Studios only brings her in when things are already a disaster. They seem to want all the other heroes to struggle first, then have her swoop in and save the day. Even in her own sequel, The Marvels, they found a way to keep her from being at her full power. And now, with Doomsday coming up, it feels like they might just leave her out of it altogether, just to avoid her being too powerful. It’s frustrating, honestly – she’s a powerhouse, and they don’t seem to want to let her shine!

Since Brie Larson won’t be appearing in Doomsday, it’s likely the movie will include a plot point explaining her absence – probably that she’s busy defending other worlds from Doctor Doom. While this keeps the possibility of her return in Avengers: Secret Wars open, the story will likely be well-established by then. It feels like Marvel Studios is avoiding a direct confrontation with her character’s power, opting instead for a storyline that sidelines her rather than acknowledging her strength.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
