A Slept-On Stephen King Adaptation That Was Re-Edited Because It Was Too Scary Just Arrived on Hulu

Stephen King is famous for writing scary stories, but very few movie adaptations of his work have been genuinely frightening enough to require changes after filming. A recent adaptation did just that – audiences screamed so much during screenings that the filmmakers actually edited it! You can now watch it on Hulu.

I recently watched The Boogeyman, and it really got to me! It’s based on a Stephen King story, and follows a therapist and his daughters who are dealing with a terrible loss. Things get even worse when a dark, frightening creature starts haunting them, feeding on their sadness and fear. Apparently, one part was so scary during test screenings they had to change it before it came out in theaters in 2023! Now, thankfully, it’s available to stream on Hulu since April 5th, so you can experience the chills too.

The Boogeyman’s Monster Was Too Terrifying for Test Audiences

For a monster movie to succeed, the creature design is key, and The Boogeyman arguably nailed it too well. The film smartly keeps its monster mostly hidden, showing only brief, shadowy glimpses of its human-like shape. When the creature is fully revealed – with its long, spider-like limbs and fangs – it’s genuinely frightening. Test screenings showed audiences screamed so loudly and for so long that important dialogue was lost. Director Savage had to add about 45 seconds of extra footage to ensure viewers didn’t miss crucial information, as he explained to Empire.

Beyond its cleverly designed monster – one that eerily imitates human voices – The Boogeyman is a classic horror film that taps into fundamental fears like the darkness and things hiding in closets. It’s particularly good at creating a truly unsettling atmosphere and delivering effective scares. Audiences gave it a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, ranking it 24th among adaptations of Stephen King’s work, and King himself praised the film, telling director Rob Savage in an email that he was still thinking about it the day after seeing it.

What’s New on Hulu?

Hulu added a lot of new movies and shows in April! The Boogeyman became available on April 5th, joining recent additions like 50 First Dates, The Beekeeper, The Day After Tomorrow, Monster House, the Night At The Museum films, Pizza Movie, and Primitive War. More titles are coming throughout the month, including Bad Boys Ride or Die on April 7th, all of the The Hunger Games movies on April 14th, and Good Boy on April 25th.
