A beloved Studio Ghibli film is returning to cinemas after 37 years with an improved presentation. Studio Ghibli is widely considered one of the greatest animation studios ever, and for good reason – they’ve created many memorable films over the years. What makes them special is the diversity of their work; each film is unique, and they remain timeless classics that audiences still enjoy decades later, making a re-release a fantastic idea.
GKIDS and IMAX are continuing their collaboration to bring Studio Ghibli’s beloved films to the big screen in IMAX. Following the successful re-release of Princess Mononoke, they’re now bringing Kiki’s Delivery Service to North American theaters with a newly remastered 4K version for IMAX screens. A special trailer and poster for the re-release are available to view below.
Kiki’s Delivery Service Coming to IMAX Theaters With 4K Remaster
Starting March 13th, the beloved film Kiki’s Delivery Service is coming to IMAX theaters in the United States and Canada, newly remastered in 4K! Tickets are available now. You can choose to watch with the original Japanese audio and English subtitles, or with an English dub. This is the first time Hayao Miyazaki’s classic will be shown in IMAX, offering fans a completely new way to experience the movie.
Released in 1989, Kiki’s Delivery Service was written and directed by the renowned Hayao Miyazaki. While not his first film, it remains a beloved classic for many anime fans. The story centers on a young witch who starts a delivery service to help people in her community. Though the premise is simple, this new IMAX release promises a much more immersive experience. It’s also great news that GKIDS is continuing its partnership with IMAX to bring beautifully remastered Studio Ghibli films back to the big screen.
What Is Kiki’s Delivery Service About?

According to GKIDS, the story of Kiki’s Delivery Service begins with a coming-of-age tradition for young witches: on the night of a full moon, they leave home to learn magic. When Kiki’s turn comes, she sets off with her witty black cat, Jiji, and arrives in a coastal town the next morning. Her special abilities quickly make her popular with the locals. The film’s initial English dub was also a big success, featuring well-known actors of the time.
The English dub of Kiki’s Delivery Service featured a fantastic cast, including Kirsten Dunst, Janeane Garofalo, Phil Hartman, and Debbie Reynolds. This new remastered version is a great chance to experience this Studio Ghibli classic – if you’ve never seen it, or are just curious, definitely give it a watch!
