The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will surprise audiences with the return of familiar faces. Notably, several actors from the original X-Men films are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While their specific roles are currently unknown, it’s likely their characters will face challenges when Doctor Doom arrives as the main villain. Adding to the excitement, Robert Downey Jr. is reprising his role for the first time since 2019, and is expected to portray a more complex and villainous side of his character.
Okay, so everyone’s talking about Robert Downey Jr.’s big comeback in 2026, and rightfully so! But it’s not just him we’re hoping to see. There’s a ton of buzz about Tobey Maguire potentially swinging back as Spider-Man, and Hugh Jackman’s name is always in the mix. Honestly though, the actor I, and a lot of other fans, are most excited about is Elizabeth Olsen. Scarlet Witch had a rough ending last time around, but there’s this interesting bit of Marvel backstory that makes me think she could play a huge role in the upcoming Doomsday project. It’s got me really curious to see what they do with her!
What If…? Extends Beyond the TV Show

Disney+’s What If…? looks at alternate universes that are similar to our own (Earth-616). While the Avengers usually still come together to save the universe, small changes can lead to big consequences, like a planet-wide zombie outbreak. In the Marvel Zombies storyline, Scarlet Witch is a villain – which isn’t unexpected, given her history. However, in one alternate reality, Wanda Maximoff actively tries to be a hero, but everyone and everything she cares about ends up opposing her, ultimately pushing her towards villainy.
The story Marvel: What If… Wanda Maximoff and Peter Parker Were Siblings? imagines Wanda and Peter Parker as brother and sister, living together. Peter tries to keep his superpowers a secret while Wanda trains with Doctor Strange to control hers. A heartbreaking event creates distance between them, leaving Wanda feeling isolated, and she finds solace in a fast-moving stranger named Pietro von Doom. The story has many surprises, but the fact that Pietro’s last name is von Doom offers a clue about what Scarlet Witch might be planning in the Doomsday storyline.
Doctor Doom Is Going to Need Allies in the MCU

As a huge Marvel fan, I was fascinated by the idea of Pietro being adopted in the ‘What If…?’ episode with Wanda and Peter Parker. Instead of Queens, he winds up living in a massive castle in Latveria! But ‘Doomsday’ could really turn things around – imagine Wanda being the one adopted by the von Doom family after losing her parents in Sokovia. It makes sense, since Doom clearly recognizes powerful potential when he sees it. He might even proactively recruit Scarlet Witch to his side, before she becomes a threat to his multiversal plans. And let’s be real, we already know he’s not above taking in orphaned kids – remember that post-credits scene in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’?
A Doom and Scarlet Witch team-up would be particularly compelling because of the history between Wanda Maximoff and Tony Stark. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda and her brother blamed Iron Man for their parents’ deaths. Even after they resolved that conflict, tension remained due to the Sokovia Accords. If Doctor Doom wants to truly unsettle the Avengers, bringing Scarlet Witch along as an ally would be a brilliant, and deeply personal, move, given her contentious past with one of Doom’s greatest foes.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
