The original Switch, launched in 2017, had been incredibly popular and became one of the best-selling game consoles ever, so there was a lot of anticipation for its successor, which featured significant technological improvements.

Now that the Switch 2 has been out for a year, it’s a good time to assess what it’s doing well and where it’s struggling. Despite strong sales and the potential to become one of Nintendo’s most profitable systems ever, limited availability and a lack of a must-have game are slowing its momentum. Considering everything, is the Switch 2 living up to expectations?

The Nintendo Switch 2 Is Doing Great — But There’s An Asterisk

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been available for a year and, despite being successful for Nintendo, it still needs more standout games to truly excel. Considering how popular the original Switch was, it’s no surprise the new console made a big splash. The launch was exciting, and the Switch 2 quickly surpassed its predecessor, likely due to the established fanbase. Nintendo has reportedly sold 19.86 million Switch 2 consoles in its first fiscal year (according to CNBC), which is a fantastic result. Strong game sales, particularly for titles like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananaza, and Pokémon Poketopia, have helped drive those numbers.

The console has had a strong first year, but its success isn’t without challenges. A global shortage of computer chips has affected Nintendo and the entire gaming industry, leading to price increases for the console. This has hurt both Nintendo’s profits and sales numbers. Industry-wide, consoles and computers are becoming more expensive. In fact, sales of the Switch 2 have dropped significantly—by 87% according to Video Game Chronicle—after the price went up. Nintendo also anticipates slower sales in the coming year. While the Switch 2 is still doing well, it faces the realities of the current gaming market and needs to attract more major game releases to become a truly essential device.

The Switch 2 Hasn’t Quite Found Perfection — But Nintendo Is Working On It

The Switch 2 has had a good start with some games available only on that console, but its game library still has plenty of room to grow. Fans are still hoping for new games in the popular Legend of Zelda and Super Mario series, but Nintendo hasn’t announced anything yet. So far, the console hasn’t had a truly standout, must-have game. Even Mario Kart World, which is currently the best-selling game on the Switch, didn’t reach the same level of impact as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild did when it first came out. Plus, some games, like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, are also available on the older Switch model. While consoles like the PlayStation 5 have impressive exclusive titles, the Switch 2 needs to offer games that its competitors don’t, such as Grand Theft Auto VI, to really stand out.

As a Nintendo fan, I’ve been really enjoying the Switch 2! Games like Donkey Kong Bananza, Mario Kart World, and especially Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream – which surprisingly sold really well – show there are already some great exclusives to get excited about. Honestly, the console feels powerful, and with the new mouse controllers, I think developers haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of what’s possible. It’s only been a year, and it feels like the Switch 2 is still finding its footing, which is actually exciting because it means there’s so much room for innovation. Sales are strong, but I don’t think we’ve seen everything it’s capable of yet. The gaming industry is tough right now, but I’m optimistic about the Switch 2’s future. This first year feels like just the beginning of what could be Nintendo’s best console ever.
