ITV is changing its programming lineup once more tonight, so you won’t be able to watch Coronation Street or Emmerdale as usual.
Instead of the originally scheduled program, the channel will now broadcast the Women’s World Cup Qualifier from 7:30 PM to 10:20 PM.
The match between Spain and England starts at 8pm at Estadi Municipal de Son Moix. Seema Jaswal will host the broadcast, with commentary and insights from former Strictly Come Dancing winner Karen Carney and Anita Asante.
Even with the introduction of a new, standardized schedule in January – dubbed “power hour” – ITV has adjusted its weekly soap opera broadcasts. They’ve decreased the number of episodes from six to five per week, with each episode now lasting 30 minutes and airing from 8pm on weeknights.
I recently spoke with Kevin Lygo, the head of ITV’s programming, and he explained their thinking behind the number of episodes they’re releasing. He believes they’ve found a sweet spot – enough episodes to keep viewers engaged, but not so many that it becomes a chore to keep up with. Basically, they want to make sure fans can easily fit the show into their busy lives.

Studies reveal that soap opera fans now expect a fast-moving plot. Shorter, 30-minute episodes, designed for streaming, are better at delivering the quick storylines, satisfying conclusions, and resolutions viewers want.
However, on numerous occasions since then, they’ve been taken off the air for sports coverage.
When are Coronation Street and Emmerdale next on?
Tonight’s episodes of Coronation Street and Emmerdale, originally scheduled to air on Friday, June 5th, will not be shown.
Fear not, as our next trip to soapland will be on Sunday 7 June between 8 and 9pm.
They will be off the air again on Tuesday, June 9th due to the England versus Ukraine Women’s European Qualifier.

On Wednesday 10 June, Emmerdale will air at the earlier time of 7pm, followed by Corrie at 7.30pm.
There will be no soaps at all as a result of the opening ceremony on Thursday 11 June.
The biggest change comes on Friday 12 June, as the previous hour-long format returns.
Emmerdale will air from 8pm, with Corrie following at 9pm.
You can watch Emmerdale weeknights at 8pm and Coronation Street at 8:30pm on ITV1. Both shows are also available to stream on ITVX from 7am each day.

As a total soap obsessive, I’ve been following Michael Adams’ work for ages! He’s the Soaps Editor over at TopMob, which means he’s basically the go-to guy for all the latest buzz and spoilers from all my favorite shows – everything from Coronation Street and EastEnders to Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Before TopMob, he was a Soaps Reporter at Metro for a couple of years, and get this – he actually worked on set for both Corrie and Emmerdale! He really knows his stuff.
