A Yellowstone Star’s Western Epic Is About To Leave HBO Max

It’s clear that Yellowstone was a huge success. The neo-Western drama, created by Taylor Sheridan, ran for five seasons on Paramount Network from 2018 to 2024 and became one of the most popular shows in recent years. With new shows like Marshals and The Madison on the way, fans don’t have much time left to stream a Western film starring a Yellowstone actor on HBO Max.

Kevin Costner’s Western film, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, will be leaving HBO Max on February 22nd, giving fans only a few days left to watch it online. This movie is the first in a planned four-part series that Costner directed, co-wrote, produced, and starred in. It tells the story of the American West over 12 years during and after the Civil War. Chapter 1 takes place in 1859 and follows several characters as they deal with life in the Midwest during a time of national division. While the film didn’t perform well in theaters—earning only $38 million on a $100 million budget—it’s the only Horizon movie released so far. Chapter 2 has been filmed and is awaiting release, and the final two parts are still being developed.

Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga Is an Ambitious Slow-Burn With More on the Way

If you enjoy the dramatic, fast-paced action of Yellowstone, Horizon: An American Saga might not be your kind of Western. This movie feels more like a classic, sprawling Western epic that takes its time and focuses on building characters and themes as an introduction to a bigger story. Don’t expect to see Kevin Costner right away – he doesn’t appear until about an hour into the three-hour film. And if you’re looking for a quick, straightforward plot, this isn’t it. Horizon tells its story through multiple perspectives and feels more like a long TV series, leaving many questions unanswered and setting up future movies.

If you’re a fan of classic Westerns and want something that feels authentic, you really shouldn’t miss Horizon. It doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to showing just how tough and dangerous life in the Old West really was. And honestly, the way it’s filmed is incredible – those big, sweeping landscapes just pull you right in. I especially appreciated how much effort Kevin Costner put into making everything look historically accurate – the sets are amazing! Critics were a bit divided, giving it around 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, but regular moviegoers seemed to really like it – it has a 70% audience score, which says a lot!

Where to Stream Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 After It Leaves HBO Max?

If you’re a fan of Kevin Costner or Westerns, don’t miss Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 on HBO Max while it’s still available. It won’t be moving to another streaming service in February, and it’s currently unknown if it will be available on any platform in March. After February 22nd, when it leaves HBO Max, your only options to watch Horizon will be to rent or buy it digitally.
