A24’s Backrooms Trailer Opens the Door to A Whole New World of Horror

Movie studios are constantly finding new material for films, and they’ve successfully adapted stories from all sorts of sources – books, comics, video games, and even toys. This summer, A24 is trying something new by turning a popular YouTube series, Backrooms, into a horror movie. The film is directed by Kane Parsons, who also created the original YouTube series, which was itself inspired by online horror stories from 4chan. A short teaser trailer was released about a month ago, giving fans a preview of the film. Now that the release date is near, A24 is ramping up its marketing efforts.

Today has been full of exciting trailer releases, including new looks at Supergirl and Masters of the Universe. A24 also dropped the official trailer for Backrooms, which gives us a better idea of the plot. It centers around Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character stumbling upon the Backrooms while in a furniture store. You can watch the trailer here:

Can Backrooms Be A24’s Next Big Horror Hit?

A24 is known for a wide range of films, from funny and heartfelt stories about growing up to big-budget science fiction adventures, but they’ve really become famous for horror. They consistently deliver creative and scary movies that also focus on strong characters and engaging stories. Because A24’s horror films have resonated so well with audiences, the fact that they’ve chosen to make Backrooms is a good sign. The film also stars highly respected actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, who recently appeared in Sentimental Value, adding even more excitement to the project.

The film follows a therapist who enters a strange, otherdimensional world to find a patient who has disappeared. From the trailer, it appears Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the missing patient and Renate Reinsve is the therapist. While the new trailer for the film doesn’t reveal the whole story, it gives a good idea of what’s happening. Ejiofor’s character becomes fascinated with this other world and keeps going back, trying to prove it’s real and that he isn’t losing his mind. He documents his experiences as evidence. As you’d expect from a supernatural story, things are not what they appear to be, but the trailer wisely keeps many secrets hidden. We don’t get a clear picture of what Ejiofor’s character actually experiences during his journeys.

The full-length Backrooms movie is inspired by the original web series, but fans shouldn’t expect a direct copy. It’s aiming to be a more creative and mind-bending horror experience than typical movies. Naturally, expanding a short web series into a feature film requires a larger story, and the filmmakers have done a good job of building on the original idea. They’ve successfully captured the unsettling look and feel of the Backrooms – those endless mazes of empty rooms – while also adding their own unique touches to keep the story interesting and new.

It will be interesting to see how the movie Backrooms performs when it’s released in late May. By then, the summer movie season will be in full swing, with The Mandalorian and Grogu coming out the week before, and several other big movies planned for June. A realistic goal for Backrooms might be similar success to Iron Lung, the indie horror film from YouTuber Markiplier, which made $52 million on a small budget of $2-3 million. A24, the studio releasing Backrooms, hopes it does well in theaters, but they’re marketing it as a different kind of horror movie for dedicated fans. With so many major blockbusters coming out, Backrooms could attract a specific audience and succeed – particularly if people enjoy it and spread the word.
