The A24 fantasy film Eternity, despite flying under the radar, quickly became a popular streaming choice after its release.
In the afterlife, Miles Teller plays Larry, who unexpectedly finds himself facing a choice: select his perfect eternity. Each eternity is themed differently. He eagerly awaits his wife, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen), hoping they can choose together after 65 years of marriage. However, things get complicated when they discover Joan’s first husband, Luke (Callum Turner), is also there, and Joan can only spend eternity with one of them.
Just one day after becoming available on Apple TV, Eternity has quickly become the most popular movie on the platform worldwide. It’s currently number one in 86 countries, including the US, Australia, Japan, and many others. This success follows a strong performance in theaters three months ago, where the movie earned $36 million globally on a $12 million budget. And with its release happening on Valentine’s Day, the film’s romantic comedy elements make it a perfect fit for the occasion.
Though not a massive hit like some fantasy movies, Eternity generally received positive reviews, earning a “Certified Fresh” rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Mae Abdulbaki of ScreenRant praised the cast’s chemistry and called the film a “largely entertaining rom-com,” even suggesting the story could have been explored in more depth. Viewers seemed to enjoy it even more than critics, giving it a 90% “Verified Hot” score on the Popcornmeter, which likely contributed to its quick popularity with Apple TV+ subscribers.
Beyond the central love story, the film explores a fantastical world, with much of its unique setting explained through the characters who manage the afterlife. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, an Academy Award winner, plays Anna, who guides Larry through the afterlife and explains how it all works. Meanwhile, Joan is assisted by Ryan (John Early), who hopes to see her reunite with Luke.
In “Eternity,” Joan faces a heartbreaking decision: choose between her first love, who she lost, and the man she’s shared most of her life with. While it’s a charming and funny romantic movie perfect for Valentine’s Day, the film offers a moving and insightful message about love and relationships that makes it worthwhile viewing at any time.
