In about 24 hours, Sega will remove a well-known, high-profile game from online stores. Over the past few years, Sega has faced criticism for gradually taking older, fan-favorite games off sale. Sometimes these removals only affect specific platforms, but other times they happen across all consoles and PCs. That’s what’s happening again now, and the reason behind it is particularly disappointing.
Sega is removing Yakuza 3 Remastered from digital stores tomorrow, February 12th. The game first came out on PlayStation 3 in 2010 and was later remastered for PlayStation 4 in 2019, along with Yakuza 4 and Yakuza 5. It’s also been available on Xbox and PC. After tomorrow, you won’t be able to buy Yakuza 3 Remastered on its own; it will only be included in the Yakuza Complete Series collection, which costs $130.
Why Is This Sega Game Being Delisted?

The upcoming removal of Yakuza 3 Remastered from digital stores is disappointing, but understandable. RGG Studio is releasing a completely rebuilt version of Yakuza 3 called Yakuza Kiwami 3 for current gaming systems. It’s common for publishers to remove older versions of games when a significantly updated version is released, and Sega and RGG Studio are doing the same thing here.
The removal of Yakuza Kiwami 3 is frustrating because it alters the ending of both Yakuza 3 and Yakuza 3 Remastered. This isn’t a minor change; it’s a significant story adjustment that could heavily impact future games in the Yakuza series. While RGG Studio hasn’t fully explained the decision, company head Masayoshi Yokoyama has indicated that Yakuza Kiwami 3 will lead to a completely new storyline and series of games.
It’s strange to see Yakuza 3 Remastered removed from digital stores. The story continues in Yakuza 4 and later games, and those titles won’t fully make sense if you’ve only played Yakuza Kiwami 3. This means Yakuza 3 Remastered remains important for anyone wanting to experience the series in the correct order. While the developers might be planning a new direction for the series in the future, those games aren’t out yet. Removing Yakuza 3 Remastered now just doesn’t make much sense.
Even though Yakuza 3 Remastered is being removed from digital stores, you’ll still be able to buy a physical copy as part of the Yakuza Remastered Collection on PS4. However, with the game no longer available digitally, the price of the physical collection might increase, so it’s best to get a copy while you still can.
