Aaron Paul is breaking a bad habit for his kids.
The Breaking Bad actor revealed he and his daughter, Story (age 7), made an agreement. He promised to put his phone away whenever he’s spending time with her, inspired by a special moment they shared with his wife, Lauren Parsekian Paul.
In a clip from WSJ Tech Live shared on Instagram on November 5th, Aaron described a common parenting moment: his daughter interrupted him while he was trying to quickly finish an email. She asked a question, then quickly lost interest and went off to play.
After a conversation with Story – which happened about a year ago – the 46-year-old felt moved to put down his phone and sincerely apologize. He remembered saying, “I’m sorry for not getting back to you.” Then, he made a promise to Story: “From now on, Daddy won’t be on his phone when we’re together.”
Aaron remembered her responding with just one word. He said she looked at him and simply said, ‘Really?’ – just that single word.
The award-winning actor shared that the touching scene deeply saddened him and reminded him of a promise he’d made to his daughter.
“She just jumped up and threw her arms around me,” he added, “like she won the biggest prize.”
Aaron, who shares a 3-year-old son named Ryder with Lauren, believes parents should make an effort to limit technology use for their children whenever they can.
But as the El Camino actor noted, it’s not a sentiment shared by everyone around him.
Oh my gosh, he was talking about dinner, and it just sounded so heavy! Like, everyone was warning him that if he didn’t do something, he’d be completely left out. It was seriously intense, and I just get that feeling, you know? It’s like, the pressure is just…everything!
Aaron strongly disagreed, arguing that people should be in control of technology, not the other way around. He believed we have the power to decide how technology impacts our lives.
Aaron isn’t the only parent who wants to limit their children’s access to phones and technology. Miranda Kerr recently shared a similar sentiment about raising her children with her husband, Evan Spiegel.
Miranda mentioned on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Show in October that her husband doesn’t like their young children using screens, explaining it’s because that’s how he grew up.
The model, who has four sons – Hart, 7, Myles, 6, Pierre, 19 months (with Evan), and Flynn, 14 (with ex-husband Orlando Bloom) – also said they were able to reach an agreement about how much screen time their older children get.
I told him that what I really enjoy is spending cozy time with the kids – my 6 and 7-year-olds, and sometimes even my teenager if they’re interested – like snuggling up to watch a movie, maybe on a weekend or for a special occasion. He understood, but said that didn’t need to happen every single weekend.
