Abbott Elementary Revitalized the Mockumentary Genre
People often compare new comedies to The Office and Parks and Recreation. While several shows have tried, Abbott Elementary is the one that really brought the workplace comedy style back to life in the 2020s. The show centers on a group of dedicated teachers at Abbott Elementary, with Janine Teagues, a cheerful second-grade teacher, as a central figure.
Created by Quinta Brunson, who also plays the lead role of Janine, the show features Tyler James Williams as first-grade teacher Gregory Eddie, Janelle James as Principal Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as sixth-grade history teacher Jacob Hill, Sheryl Lee Ralph as kindergarten teacher Barbara Howard, and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson, the school custodian.
Abbott Elementary is a funny, documentary-style show that follows the dedicated teachers at a public school in Philadelphia. The school is underfunded and most of its students are Black, and the show highlights the everyday challenges and heartwarming moments both inside and outside the classroom as the teachers work hard to support their students and keep the school running.

It boasts incredibly high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 99% score and audiences a 90% score. The second season even achieved a perfect 100% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating from critics.
The hit show Abbott Elementary received three Primetime Emmy Awards: for its pilot episode’s writing, and for performances by Sheryl Lee Ralph (Supporting Actress) and Quinta Brunson (Lead Actress) in a comedy series. In 2023, it also won Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.
