In the upcoming storyline, the unrivaled Batman is poised to make news again as fans eagerly await the reveal of the adversaries he’ll encounter. The Absolute Universe remains a hit for DC Comics, with readers devouring every title, particularly Absolute Batman. The talented duo of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta are behind Absolute Batman, but an upcoming special issue will introduce additional creators to the team. One such creator is Daniel Warren Johnson (known for his work on Transformers), and he’s got exciting plans for Absolute Batman that take inspiration from real-world events, particularly the villains he intends to pit against Batman.
At San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, Daniel Warren Johnson was among several creators participating in DC’s Gotham Panel. Alongside him were editor Rob Levin, Matt Fraction, Scott Snyder, Nick Dragotta, Dan Jurgens, and Kyle Higgins. During their discussion about Absolute Batman 2025 Annual #1, which is slated for release in October, Johnson revealed that his story draws inspiration from current events. He expressed that this has given him an outlet to channel his frustration constructively, sharing with the audience that Batman will be battling white nationalists in his upcoming issue.
Absolute Batman vs. White Nationalists
Earlier, DC unveiled information about the upcoming one-shot titled “Absolute Batman 2025 Annual #1″, but its synopsis didn’t hint at any involvement of white nationalists. However, a closer look at Daniel Warren Johnson’s cover art reveals these extremist groups prominently. The artwork depicts a crowd of individuals donning white hoods and advancing towards Absolute Batman, armed with torches, bats, pipes, and knives.
Regarding the Absolute Batman, he’s squaring off against an enraged mob, clutching a large hammer resembling his signature Bat emblem on his chest. It’s important to note that this narrative unfolds during the early stages of Batman’s career, where he’s likely working hard to earn recognition as a vigilante. However, one constant about Absolute Batman is that he doesn’t shy away from expressing his convictions or standing up against wickedness.
Some enthusiasts might object to Batman battling villains inspired by real-life events, but it’s not unprecedented for our heroes to confront such types of criminality. For instance, Superman has frequently tackled racism, most notably in “Superman Smashes the Klan,” penned by Gene Luen Yang and illustrated by Gurihiru. The narrative is inspired by a 1946 Superman radio show, where the Man of Steel stands tall to protect a Chinese-American family who suffer racial discrimination after relocating to Metropolis.
In this instance, I’m standing by Batman as he takes on the challenge of combating bigotry and bias. It’s intriguing to imagine how he tackles white nationalists, and the degree of force he might employ against them. Given that we’ve witnessed him kicking a child into the river during a battle with Black Mask’s gang in “Absolute Batman,” it’s clear that nothing would be out of character for him at this point.
The invitation for the “Absolute Batman 2025 Annual” #1 states: “Find out how Bruce Wayne got his Batmobile. Discover what occurred when Black Mask’s gang clashed with the Bat during their initial encounters. The “Absolute Batman 2025 Annual” from DC Comics gives you a glimpse into the rough, formative turmoil that Absolute Batman experienced in his early years.
