The third part of James Cameron’s Avatar series, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, appears to be facing turbulence. On Monday, the first trailer for this film was released online, transporting us back to Pandora and into renewed conflict. The newcomers in this installment include a previously unseen Na’vi tribe called the “Ash People,” as well as fresh creatures. The narrative also seems more intricate than ever, with characters from the previous two movies playing significant roles. Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to premiere in theaters on December 19th.
In 2022, the final Avatar film concluded rather dramatically, and this new trailer offers some insight into where our principal characters currently stand. Following her decisive actions in Avatar: The Way of Water, it appears that Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) is grappling with re-establishing her tranquil lifestyle, as Jake (Sam Worthington) cautions her about dwelling in hate. On the other hand, their son, Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), seems to be experiencing a sense of dislocation since his family departed from Neytiri’s tribe and is having difficulty assimilating into the reef clan.
In this story, the chief of the Ash People, named Varang (played by Oona Chaplin), appears to serve as a contrast to Neytiri. Her actions towards Neytiri include threats and criticisms of her goddess in the climactic scene. According to James Cameron, the Ash People are portrayed as being pushed to extremes at the start of the film, marking them as the initial antagonists. Interestingly, while Varang is deeply devoted to her tribe, this doesn’t necessarily mean that her actions are justifiable.
He stated, “She’s willing to go to any lengths for them, including acts that might be perceived as wicked.” In creating this movie, we aimed to avoid oversimplification. Not just black-and-white or blue-and-pink simplistic… We’re striving to progress beyond the ‘all humans are villainous, all Na’vi are heroic’ stereotype.
In this trailer, it’s evident that chaos and destruction rule among human characters, but what stands out too is the potential appearance of Recombinants – deceased humans whose consciousnesses have been transferred permanently into synthetic Na’vi bodies. The return of Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang) and humanity’s persistent attacks on Pandora are also highlighted. However, characters like Spider (Jack Champion) and the rebellious scientists introduce an element of complexity to James Cameron’s narrative vision.
The movie titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash” will be in theaters starting from December 19th. Until then, you can catch up with the earlier two episodes, currently streaming on Disney+.
