New variant cover for Absolute Batman #19 honors Death Note

As a huge Batman fan, I was really excited to see this new variant cover for Absolute Batman #19 that just appeared online! It’s a fantastic tribute to a really popular anime, and the artist, Clay Mann, did an amazing job with the design.

The cover of Absolute Batman #19, shared on X (formerly Twitter), is strikingly similar to the first volume of the Death Note manga, “Boredom.” Fans have noticed that the Absolute Joker appears on the comic cover in the same pose as the Shinigami Ryuk from Death Note, mirroring how Absolute Scarecrow takes on the role of Light Yagami on the original manga cover.

Similar to Ryuk from Death Note, and described as far more terrifying than the standard Joker, this version of the character is depicted standing atop a heap of human skulls. He also lives for a significantly longer time than most people.

Fans quickly responded to the cover, praising its clever reference to Death Note. One commenter wrote that the homage in Absolute Batman #19 was perfectly executed and captured the same feeling as the original.

As a huge fan, I’m really hoping we get another awesome crossover like the one between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Naruto! I just love it when artists from both manga and comics show respect for each other’s work – those collaborations are always amazing, and I’m dreaming of seeing another one happen.

One comic book fan declared this cover their all-time favorite, exclaiming, “This is incredibly cool – possibly my favorite cover inspired by manga!”

Someone pointed out a striking similarity between Light Yagami from Death Note and Batman, saying they both have a sense of powerful control – Light over life and death with his notebook, and Batman over Gotham City.
