The Court of Owls is a fascinating addition to the Batman universe. This secret society, made up of Gotham City’s wealthiest and most corrupt citizens, quickly became popular when it first appeared in the ‘New 52’ comics. Now, one of its creators, Scott Snyder, is reimagining the Court for the upcoming ‘Absolute Batman’ series with a new and unexpected approach.
The latest issue of Absolute Batman, created by Scott Snyder and Eric Canete, finished with a surprising reveal: Martha Wayne is still alive in this alternate universe and was shown contacting the Court of Owls. They hinted they’d been expecting her return, which makes sense considering she previously served as Deputy Mayor of Gotham City. Interestingly, she also has ties to the influential Kane family, who were among the city’s founders.
The latest issue of Absolute Batman begins with a shocking event: Martha Wayne seems to be kidnapped by members of the Court of Owls. This happens while she’s trying to reach her son after running across the country. This action feels consistent with how the Court of Owls usually operates in the DC Universe, but there’s a hidden layer to what’s happening.
How Absolute Batman’s Court of Owls is different
Martha Wayne is brought to a hidden airplane hangar in the desert, which turns out to be a base for the Court of Owls. It’s revealed that this Court isn’t a mysterious secret society, but a powerful armed group. We also learn that Martha Wayne used to be a Talon – one of their highly trained, elite soldiers.
It’s never fully explained why Martha left the Court of Owls, but she was instructed to only reach out if absolutely necessary. She believed the conflict between Absolute Batman and the Joker in Gotham City qualified as one of those dire situations.
The surprising thing about this new Court of Owls is their completely changed goal. The original Court secretly supported Gotham City’s corrupt leaders and maintained the existing power structure. But this new version, the Absolute Universe Court of Owls, is dedicated to opposing the wealthy and influential. They’re particularly interested in Jack Grimm, also known as Absolute Joker, which might lead them to team up with Absolute Batman in the future.
Absolute Batman #18 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
