Absolute Green Arrow Will Be a Horror Story and Here’s What That Could Mean

I have to admit, I was a little let down by Green Arrow’s role in the Absolute Universe event. But I’m really hopeful about the upcoming miniseries! We’ve known for a while now that the Emerald Archer was getting his own series within this universe, and I’m excited to see what Pornsak Pichetshote and Rafael Albuquerque have planned. Honestly, it’s been frustrating waiting for details – we only know it will be six issues long! And that Absolute Evil one-shot just left me even more confused, so I’m really looking forward to seeing where this new series takes him.

The comic series Absolute Evil, which primarily focuses on villains, revealed details about Oliver Queen in that universe. Surprisingly, he was quite similar to the Oliver Queen we know from the main DC Universe – still wealthy, an excellent archer, and dedicated to fighting crime. However, the powerful figures running that world didn’t appreciate his efforts and had him eliminated by Absolute Hawkman. Though it appeared to be a definitive end for him, recent hints suggest Absolute Green Arrow’s story may not be over.

Absolute Green Arrow is Going to be a Horror Story

We’re still eagerly awaiting news on the Absolute Green Arrow series, which is currently scheduled to launch next spring. After a long period of silence, we finally received an update from Rafael Albuquerque, a member of the creative team. At CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, he shared that Absolute Green Arrow will lean more towards horror than traditional superhero storytelling, and fans who enjoyed his American Vampire comic will likely enjoy this new series as well.

We’ve gotten a little more information now, but Albuquerque hasn’t revealed much else about the upcoming miniseries. His mention of American Vampire doesn’t necessarily mean vampires will be in it – at least, that’s what I believe. However, it’s clear he’s hinting at a key part of the story. Similar to other titles in the Absolute Universe, which have tried new styles to differentiate themselves from regular DC comics, Absolute Green Arrow will be incorporating horror elements to make it unique.

The term ‘horror’ can cover a lot of ground – like when Oliver Queen suffered a brutal injury at the hands of Hawkman. So, what does the writer mean when he calls Absolute Green Arrow a horror story? Without many details, the possibilities are endless. However, looking at other books in the ‘Absolute’ series gives us some clues about the type of horror this story will explore.

Absolute Green Arrow: Zombie, Monster, or Survival Story?

Many fans, like myself, immediately thought that turning Absolute Green Arrow into a horror story likely means we’ll see a zombie version of the character. It sounds crazy, but with the darker themes appearing in the Absolute series—like Zatanna’s magic in Absolute Wonder Woman and the demonic presence within the Joker—it doesn’t seem so far-fetched. Could Oliver Queen return as an undead hero, still fighting for what’s right even after death?

Another popular idea is that the upcoming Absolute Green Arrow series might depict the last few hours of Oliver Queen’s life, leading up to his death at the hands of Hawkman. Oliver certainly possessed the skills and tools to fight back, and a survival horror story is a genre many enjoy. It would be a powerfully intense narrative to watch Oliver struggle to survive his confrontation with Hawkman, unaware it would be his final battle as a hero.

It seems pretty clear what’s going to happen next. With Oliver Queen gone, someone new will become the Green Arrow. And just like with any hero, the world’s villains will come after them—with a particularly nasty twist. As previous stories have shown, a secret group controls the world and has access to dangerous monsters. What could be a bigger test for a new, inexperienced Green Arrow than fighting an army of these creatures?

The upcoming Absolute Green Arrow series being described as a horror story is intriguing, and could take many forms. It’s surprising that, after almost six months of knowing about the miniseries, we still don’t know much about the characters or the plot. Hopefully, the creators, Pichetshote and Albuquerque, have something truly frightening in store that lives up to our expectations.
