As a huge movie fan, I’m excited to see Prime Video really embracing the holidays! They’ve already added some great picks this December, like the classic Love Actually and a newer film called Oh. What. Fun. But the big news is their new Christmas rom-com with Charlie Cox – you know, the guy from Marvel? It just dropped, and honestly, people seem a little divided on whether it’s worth watching or not.
The new Amazon movie, Merv, premiered on Prime Video on December 10th. Starring Giovanni Ribisi and Zooey Deschanel, the film follows Russ and Anna, a divorced couple who must work together when their dog, Merv, becomes withdrawn after their separation. As they try to cheer Merv up, they might just find a way to reconnect with each other.
Merv Is a Predictable but Sweet Holiday Rom-Com
Since only a few reviews of Merv are available on Rotten Tomatoes, it doesn’t have an official critic score yet. Early impressions suggest it’s a typical holiday romantic comedy – perfectly watchable, but not particularly memorable.
Critics weren’t impressed with Merv. Tomris Laffly of Variety called it forgettable and typical streaming content, while Nate Richard from Collider admitted it’s exactly what you’d expect from a Christmas rom-com, but still ‘pretty darn cute.’ Grant Hermanns of ScreenRant felt the film was overly simplistic and didn’t trust the audience to pick up on subtleties, relying on predictable and heavily explained plot points.
Ultimately, Merv is a fairly typical, though enjoyable, holiday movie for those who love the genre. It doesn’t offer anything new, but it’s carried by the likable performances of the main actors and a seriously cute dog. While the script is predictable and the characters aren’t fully developed, it has some funny moments. If you enjoy romantic comedies or Christmas movies, Merv might provide a pleasant, if fleeting, experience, but it’s unlikely to become a holiday classic.
What’s New on Prime Video?
Prime Video is adding a lot of new movies this December! December 1st saw the arrival of several titles, including Four Weddings and a Funeral, the 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, all the Madagascar movies, and Zombieland. Since then, films like Bullet Train and The Phoenician Scheme have become available, and even more are coming later this month. Keep an eye out for Joker: Folie à Deux on December 16th and A Minecraft Movie on December 22nd, as well as Merv.
