The Absolute Universe is a far more brutal version of the DC Universe. While the main DC Universe centers on Superman’s optimism, the Absolute Universe has been twisted by Darkseid’s evil influence. In this reality, hope is rare and heroes are constantly struggling. Everyone suffers – Superman relived Krypton’s destruction, and Batman faced terrifying new versions of his enemies. Yet, one hero still stands out as a beacon of light: Absolute Wonder Woman. Since her arrival, she has become the heart of this dark world.

Despite a difficult upbringing, Diana always maintains a positive attitude, offering hope and compassion even in the darkest situations. She embodies the classic superhero ideal, which is reflected in her widespread popularity. However, even Wonder Woman isn’t immune to the world’s pain. The recent Absolute Wonder Woman #19 revealed a hidden ability of Diana’s – one that’s potentially her biggest weakness.

Blessed and Cursed With the Power of Love

This issue is the second-to-last part of the “Season of the Witch” story arc. Throughout the story, a key idea has been the strength of love, and we’ve seen glimpses into Diana’s past and her connection with the goddess Aphrodite. This issue reveals why Aphrodite stopped visiting Diana when she was a child: she couldn’t cope with the guilt and regret over how she had treated her.

Aphrodite told Circe that each goddess contributed a part of herself and her power to Diana. Aphrodite’s gift was a touch of her ability to inspire affection – enough that people would naturally want to believe in Diana once they met her. It wasn’t a powerful, instant charm, but it gave her an advantage when building relationships. If someone was already inclined to like her, this magic made it much easier, and that could be a significant issue.

Love Easily Given Is Love Never Earned

Wonder Woman is naturally likable, which is actually a burden for someone as compassionate as Diana. She constantly questions whether people genuinely care for her, or if they’re simply responding to a magical charm that makes them inclined to like her. It’s hard to trust anyone’s feelings when she doesn’t know if they’re real. The only person she truly knows loved her for who she is, is her mother, but even that’s just one person. As a public figure with many friends, Diana wonders how many of those connections are genuine and not influenced by Aphrodite’s magic.

Zatanna’s actions perfectly illustrate this point. She put herself in danger to save Wonder Woman, displaying a level of affection that felt unusually strong, almost like a romantic interest. While Wonder Woman has certainly helped Zatanna before, this intense care seemed to develop very quickly. The most likely explanation is that Aphrodite’s magic is influencing Zatanna’s feelings. We, as readers, know Wonder Woman doesn’t need magical help to be loved – she’s earned our affection naturally. However, Wonder Woman herself doesn’t know this, and she lives with the constant uncertainty of whether someone’s feelings for her are genuine.

Wonder Woman is known for her honesty and dedication to truth, but she struggles with the fact that people are influenced simply by who she is. She feels trapped, unable to escape the effect she has on others. She’s been given the gift of inspiring love, but can never know if those feelings are real or just a result of her divine connection. It’s a deeply heartbreaking situation.
