Wonder Woman is famous for many things, and for fans, her invisible plane is a well-known part of her story. Along with her bullet-deflecting bracelets and truth-telling lasso, it’s one of the signature elements of her powers. However, the invisible jet often gets less attention than those other iconic features. This raises the questions: where did this unique vehicle come from, and how important is it to Wonder Woman’s adventures?
Believe it or not, Wonder Woman’s invisible jet actually debuted much earlier than many people realize – it first appeared in Sensation Comics #1 in 1942, shortly after Wonder Woman herself was introduced. It was one of the many advanced technologies created by the Amazons (like their Purple Healing Ray), and Diana originally used it to bring Steve Trevor home. The jet became a regular part of Wonder Woman’s adventures, appearing in countless cartoons and TV shows. However, despite its long history with the character, not everyone appreciates the invisible jet, and at least one writer isn’t a fan.
Absolute Wonder Woman is Saying ‘No’ to Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet

Kelly Thompson, the writer of Absolute Wonder Woman, is being praised for her take on the character. She recently discussed the story with the Splash Pages Comic Book Club, and the conversation led to the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful item Diana recently obtained. Some readers have speculated if the trident’s see-through quality connects it to Wonder Woman’s invisible plane, but Thompson clarified that she isn’t a fan of the jet and it won’t be appearing in future issues (and she made a playful note that was no accident).
I totally understand Thompson’s point. The Invisible Jet just doesn’t really match the atmosphere of the Absolute Universe. This world is about heroes being less powerful than their normal versions, and that includes losing their typical gear. Also, Absolute Wonder Woman already has a cool way to fly – her awesome skeletal Pegasus. Even though I like the Invisible Jet, I agree that the Pegasus fits the darker, unique tone of the Absolute Universe much better.
Many fans haven’t been thrilled with Wonder Woman’s invisible plane, and some have even forgotten about it. After the ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’ storyline, Wonder Woman gained the ability to fly herself, making the plane unnecessary. While it briefly reappeared as a transforming alien, the ‘New 52’ reboot removed it again. Writer Greg Rucka later brought it back during ‘Rebirth,’ reimagining it as the plane Steve Trevor originally flew. Despite being removed from the story multiple times, Wonder Woman’s invisible plane consistently finds its way back.
Like it or Not, Wonder Woman’s Iconic Plane Will Always Be Part of Her

Let’s be honest, Wonder Woman’s invisible jet is pretty silly. But it’s no more unbelievable than other classic superhero details – like a T. rex in the Batcave or the Flash keeping his costume in a ring (when he could easily run home to change!). Even Wonder Woman’s backstory includes strange things, such as aliens that look like kangaroos used as transportation. And that’s perfectly fine! These quirky and unusual elements are what make comics so enjoyable and special.
Of course, Wonder Woman fans all have different opinions, and I expect some will disagree with me. Some people feel the invisible plane doesn’t fit with her character, and that’s a valid point. I’m not saying stories without it are worse – any Wonder Woman story can be great. However, I believe the invisible plane is a significant part of who Wonder Woman is and can’t be ignored when considering her overall story.
Since Thompson doesn’t seem to like the invisible jet, I doubt we’ll see it in the new Wonder Woman movie – and that’s no accident! However, looking back at its history, it’s clear the jet will always be associated with Wonder Woman. It won’t work in every story, and that’s perfectly fine. When a story needs to be more serious, it’s okay to minimize some of the more fantastical elements. But as long as Wonder Woman exists, her famous jet will likely always reappear – and I definitely meant that pun!
