Acclaimed Shonen Jump Original Returns With New Look At Beloved Characters Amid Anime Delay

Katsura Hoshino’s popular manga, D.Gray-man, first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004. However, the author’s health issues caused frequent breaks in publication. In 2018, the manga moved to Jump SQ. Rise and began releasing new chapters only four times a year. This slower pace, combined with delays in digital releases and translated volumes, makes it harder for international fans to follow the story. Despite these challenges, D.Gray-man remains beloved for its creative world, interesting powers, beautiful artwork, and captivating plot.

Good news for manga fans! Volume 29 of the series is now available for pre-order, both as a physical copy and digitally, according to Viz Media’s website. Originally released in Japan last July, the English version will arrive on August 4, 2026. This means fans have been waiting nearly three years for a new English release, following Volume 28 which came out in November 2023. The new volume features a striking cover showcasing Lavi – but it’s not the Lavi everyone knows. This Lavi has white hair and wears glasses, and represents a previous member of the Bookman Clan, a group dedicated to preserving the world’s secret history.

What Is D.Gray-man About?

Long ago, certain individuals were granted incredible powers and given sacred artifacts called the Innocence. These artifacts are the only way to destroy Akuma – artificial creatures created by the villainous Millennium Earl. The Earl wants to destroy both the Akuma and those who can defeat them, and ultimately recreate a devastating flood that occurred centuries in the past. To prevent this, an organization called the Black Order was created to gather those with the Innocence from around the world.

The story has taken a dramatic new direction, focusing on Allen Walker’s struggle to understand who he is. Meanwhile, a fan-favorite character, Lavi, has been absent for over 15 years – since chapter 202. He finally reappears in chapter 258, which was published in the Spring 2026 issue of Jump SQ. Rise magazine.

D.Gray-man Anime Has Yet to Return

The manga is currently being published regularly, but a new season of the anime hasn’t been announced yet. The anime first aired in 2006 and ran for 103 episodes until 2008, gaining a large following and inspiring comparisons to other stories in later years. However, due to a shortage of source material and production challenges, it took TMS Entertainment eight years to release a follow-up series, D. Gray Man: Hallow, in 2016.

The new anime season was widely criticized for its low-quality animation and uneven storytelling. It wasn’t well-received enough to even get a home video release, and the show was ultimately cancelled. Despite this, the sequel ran for 13 episodes, but with over 200 chapters of source material still available, it’s unlikely to get another season.
