This year, “Common Side Effects” from Adult Swim earned a notable nomination in the Emmys, being recognized as a top contender for the “Best Animated Series” award. Although it’s uncertain if the Cartoon Network show will take home the prize due to strong competition, this recognition underscores how much Adult Swim has grown since its beginning. For supporters of the network, “Common Side Effects” isn’t the only Adult Swim original vying for an Emmy. In fact, one original anime has managed to secure a spot in this year’s Emmys beyond the main animated series category.
As an anime enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the groundbreaking anime series, Lazarus, created by Cowboy Bebop mastermind Shinichiro Watanabe, has been nominated in the “Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music” category! The electrifying opening theme of this show certainly rocks, but it faces tough competition from other contenders eyeing that golden trophy. Other nominees in this category include The Residence, The White Lotus, Dept. Q, Your Friends & Neighbors, and Dune: Prophecy. If you’re excited to find out who takes home the award, mark your calendars for September 14th! That’s when the 2025 Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on CBS and Paramount+ this fall. Here’s hoping Watanabe adds another Emmy award to his collection for his exceptional work on Lazarus!
Lazarus Season 2?
Lazarus’ first season has concluded, but it might not mark the end of the series on Adult Swim. Creator Watanabe hinted that the main characters are still active and a second season could be on the horizon, “With many issues remaining unresolved in the world, the team will carry on. Their story is far from finished. By the way, a sequel could happen.” Although no official announcement has been made, Adult Swim also recently confirmed that anime original Ninja Kamui is coming back for two seasons, indicating that revivals of anime shows are possible in general.
In our review of “Lazarus,” scoring a solid four out of five, we praised its captivating anime aesthetic for enhancing the Adult Swim series and noted that it exudes an impressive level of style in every frame. The story within seems tailor-made for today’s political climate, providing a unique perspective on a pharmaceutical apocalypse. There is still hope present in this depiction of the future, but “Lazarus” also doesn’t shy away from portraying the harsh realities faced by those who don’t conform to societal norms. With its distinctive tone, it easily stands out among shows like “Cowboy Bebop.” To watch the first season, you can find “Lazarus” streaming on HBO Max.
