A new animated series on Adult Swim has announced a delay, falling into a familiar pattern with The Simpsons and their annual Halloween specials. The Simpsons has produced a Halloween-themed episode every year since its second season, totaling 37 seasons. However, due to broadcast scheduling conflicts with FOX, many of these ‘Treehouse of Horror’ episodes have aired after Halloween, sometimes in November. This became a running joke within the show itself, and unfortunately, the trend continues this year.
Even though the latest Simpsons Treehouse of Horror aired before Halloween, the Halloween episode of Smiling Friends will now premiere in November. Adult Swim recently announced – and @Swimpedia on X first noticed – that the new Smiling Friends episode will air on November 2nd instead of October 26th, as many fans expected.

The new episode of Smiling Friends, titled “Curse of the Green Halloween Witch,” will now air on Adult Swim on Sunday, November 2nd at 11:30 PM ET. Originally planned to release during the Halloween season, the episode has been delayed a week. Adult Swim hasn’t explained the reason for the change, which is disappointing for fans who are enjoying the current season. However, there are still plenty more new episodes on the way!
I recently learned that Smiling Friends has been picked up for seasons 4 and 5 by Adult Swim, which is great news! But the creators are also already thinking about how they want the show to eventually conclude. According to co-creator Michael Cusack, they want to end things while the show is still strong, before they start making episodes that fans aren’t enjoying. He said it’s less about a specific number of seasons and more about a gut feeling – knowing when everyone collectively feels it’s time to wrap things up.
What’s Next for Smiling Friends?
In an interview with ComicBook, Zach Hadel, one of the show’s creators, discussed how he and John Cusack have continually talked about how and when the series might end. They’ve debated since the very beginning – even considering how many seasons they’d make if they had unlimited resources. Hadel explained that the decision will ultimately come down to feeling creatively spent – when they feel they’ve exhausted their ideas or started repeating themselves. That’s when they’ll know it’s time to wrap things up.
