After 13 Years, Scarlett Johansson Officially Returns to A24 for New Ari Aster Movie

Scarlett Johansson is working with A24 again on a new film called Scapegoat, directed by Ari Aster. This collaboration marks a return for Johansson, who last appeared in an A24 movie, Under the Skin, thirteen years ago. That film was directed by the Academy Award-nominated Jonathan Glazer.

Aster has completed the script for his new film, Scapegoat, but details about the story are being kept secret. He will also direct and produce the movie for A24, alongside his producing partner Lars Knudsen, through their Square Peg production company.

Scarlett Johansson was Ari Aster’s first pick for the lead role in Scapegoat, and sources say she immediately agreed to join the project after reading the script. Filming is scheduled to begin in late 2026 to work around Johansson’s other commitments.

Ari Aster Returns to A24

Scapegoat will be director Aster’s fifth movie, and his fifth collaboration with A24. He first gained recognition with the 2018 horror film Hereditary, which starred Toni Collette and was a hit with both critics and audiences. He’s been working with A24 ever since, and is known for his creative and distinctive screenplays.

Ari Aster’s 2019 film, Midsommar, with Florence Pugh, was also a critical success. However, his more recent movies, Beau Is Afraid (2023) and Eddington (2025), didn’t perform well at the box office, even though critics generally liked them. Now, Aster and A24 are likely hoping that casting a popular star like Johansson in Scapegoat will help the film attract a larger audience and regain commercial success.

Scarlett Johansson Remains Booked and Busy

Johansson’s newest film is Scapegoat, her first major project since finishing her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021. Over the last five years, she’s appeared in diverse movies, including the Wes Anderson films Asteroid City and The Phoenician Scheme, the romantic comedy Fly Me to the Moon, the animated film Transformers One, and the action-packed Jurassic World Rebirth.

Greta Johansson recently directed her first film, Eleanor the Great, a drama from Sony Pictures Classics. The movie stars June Squibb as a 94-year-old woman who forms an unexpected bond with a 19-year-old student in New York City. It was released in 2025 and generally received positive reviews from critics.

Production on Scapegoat won’t start until late 2026 because Johansson is currently filming another project. She’ll move directly from that film into Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II. Reeves recently shared a hint that the sequel to The Batman will be set during the winter.

Another Jurassic World Rebirth movie is being developed. Scarlett Johansson is likely to reprise her role as Zora Bennett, a specialist in covert operations. She has also finished filming two other projects: the crime drama Paper Tiger and the animated film Ray Gunn, where she voices the character Venus Nova.
