After 18 Years, Marvel Officially Turned One Hero Into the REAL First Avenger

The Avengers are known as the leading superhero team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but surprisingly, the true hero of the franchise isn’t actually on the team. From the very first Iron Man movie, everything was leading up to the first Avengers film, and its sequels have consistently been the biggest movie events in the series. While many characters have joined the Avengers over time, the best example of a classic vigilante hero isn’t found in any of the Avengers movies.

Many of Marvel’s most popular heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, and Hulk, have been associated with the Avengers. Even characters not traditionally part of the team, like Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, are now linked to them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming Avengers: Doomsday is expanding this even more by including heroes from different universes, such as the Fantastic Four. Despite the large number of characters connected to the Avengers, it’s often surprising how rarely they actually team up and act like a cohesive group.

The Punisher Actually Avenges People, Whereas The Avengers Defend

In the scene after the credits of Iron Man, Nick Fury tells Tony Stark about the Avengers Initiative – the project that eventually led to the team being known as the Avengers in the 2012 movie, and they’ve been called that ever since. This raises an interesting question: what exactly are the Avengers avenging? While some fans think it’s Agent Coulson’s death in The Avengers, the team was already trying to stop Loki, and Coulson’s death didn’t really change their mission. Also, the team had already chosen the name ‘Avengers’ before Coulson died, which makes the meaning behind the name seem a bit random.

The name “Avengers” first appeared in a 1963 comic book, where the Wasp thought it sounded “colorful and dramatic.” Interestingly, the movie universe’s team doesn’t actually seem to avenge anything, even after the 2012 film. While they do fight back against Thanos, and later respond to the devastation he causes in Endgame, they were already battling him in Infinity War. The dictionary defines “avenge” as taking action in response to a wrong, meaning the Avengers’ missions should be about retaliation, not simply preventing problems in the first place.

The Avengers are known for defending people, rather than simply getting revenge. Revenge is a complicated issue, and it would be difficult to create inspiring stories about heroes if they were constantly driven by it. However, the Punisher is a clear exception. Frank Castle’s story is entirely based on avenging the murder of his family. While he initially seems motivated by rage when he appears in season 2 of Daredevil, the first season of The Punisher centers on his quest for revenge, and the second season explores the consequences of his actions.

While not officially an Avenger, Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, can be seen as the MCU’s original avenger. His story deeply examines the idea of revenge and whether his violent actions are ever truly right – a theme that hasn’t been explored in any of the Avengers movies. Future films, like Doomsday, might finally show the Avengers taking revenge on behalf of others, but for now, Frank Castle stands alone as one of the only true avengers in the MCU.

Ironically, The Punisher’s Corner Of The MCU Features A Better Name For The Avengers

The Frank Castle seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe first appeared in the Netflix series Defenders, which, somewhat surprisingly, would have been a more fitting name for the Avengers. These shows brought together Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist as the Defenders. While the Avengers mostly defend against threats – often from outer space or creations like Ultron – they don’t typically focus on avenging anyone. It might have made more sense to call that team “the Defenders,” and perhaps label characters like the Punisher as Avengers.

This change is unlikely to ever happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Avengers are a hugely recognizable team, and Marvel wouldn’t risk damaging that reputation over something so minor. Still, when you really think about it, the name “Avengers” doesn’t actually fit what the team does very well.
