When Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace came out in 1999, it was a huge hit with moviegoers worldwide. Darth Maul, a powerful Sith Lord, was heavily featured in the film’s promotion. George Lucas initially found early designs for Maul frightening, but the final version was intentionally scary to attract audiences. Though Maul seemingly died in the film, Lucas soon realized this was a mistake. He brought the character back in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, revealing that Maul had actually survived.
After 27 years, Darth Maul is getting his own TV series! Set during the oppressive era of the Empire, Maul – Shadow Lord will explore how the rogue Sith Lord manages to survive under the rule of Palpatine and Darth Vader. IGN recently shared a first look at the show, and it suggests we’re finally getting the sequel fans have been hoping for.
I got a sneak peek at a clip from the upcoming Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, and it’s amazing! It’s coming to Disney+ on April 6th, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.

Maul – Shadow Lord Is a Unique Star Wars Story

The animated short Maul – Shadow Lord draws inspiration from visually striking works like Arcane and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, using a dynamic, realistic style that’s especially effective for lightsaber battles. The animation incorporates detailed painted backgrounds and a unique watercolor effect, making each scene visually vibrant. While the animation, as shown in the impressive IGN clip, is excellent, the true highlight is the music. It revisits familiar themes from The Phantom Menace, creating a powerfully ominous and grand atmosphere that emphasizes Maul’s menacing character and separates him from the rest of the galactic landscape.
Let’s be honest, back in 1999, the average moviegoer had no clue who or what a Sith even was. The original Star Wars trilogy never actually said the word, and only the most dedicated fans knew Darth Vader belonged to some kind of dark side cult. So when Darth Maul showed up and was named as a Sith, it was a genuinely thrilling reveal. But over the last 27 years, that impact has faded. We’ve seen so many Jedi versus Sith battles that the whole thing feels a little…routine. That’s what makes Maul – Shadow Lord so refreshing; it brings something new to the table.
The Shadow Lord series offers a fresh take on Darth Maul, portraying him as an ambitious criminal boss trying to build a powerful empire. As shown in a clip from IGN, this puts Maul in conflict with ordinary people who are no match for his dark side abilities. This is exciting because it promises to reveal the full extent of Darth Maul’s power.
Expect lots of exciting lightsaber battles! We’ll see Darth Maul training a Twi’lek apprentice – a Jedi who managed to survive the devastating Order 66. Darth Vader’s agents, the Inquisitors, will be hunting Maul, and at least two of them will end up fighting him. Many fans are also hoping to finally witness a showdown between Maul and Darth Vader, and that alone is why this Star Wars series has been so highly anticipated since the earlier movies.
