Owlcat Games, the studio behind popular RPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, has shared new details about their next game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. A recent preview in PCGamer revealed information about the game’s companions, and many have noted similarities between them and the companions found in BioWare’s Mass Effect series.
In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, players will encounter a diverse cast of characters, including J, the player character’s twin and the crew’s executive officer. J is described as an impulsive but dependable ally, and her special ability is called Precision. The crew also features Teo, a doctor with a unique skill called Malfunction. Teo is a lively and experienced combat medic who lost his license back on Earth, and he can use experimental stimulants to enhance his abilities during gameplay.
The crew of The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is made up of diverse personalities. Regina, a liaison officer, is reserved and relies on her Precision Exploit ability. In contrast, Polly, the ship’s engineer, is young, cheerful, and talkative. She supports the team in combat with her SMG and a Demolition Exploit. The crew also includes characters like Aleesha, an electronic warfare specialist, who enjoys tackling complex challenges to push her own limits – her specialty is Cyber-attack.
Rounding out the team is Michael, the gunner. He previously served in the UN military and private security, but became frustrated with both. He’s a man of strong principles, but haunted by past traumas. His special ability is Demolition. Zafar, a mechanical engineer, provides a calm contrast to the crew’s more outspoken members. In combat, he uses turrets and EMF devices to disrupt enemies by disabling their equipment, and his Malfunction ability will also be a valuable asset.
We’ve also learned more about how Exploits work during gameplay. These are special abilities you can use in combat to gain an advantage. For instance, characters with the Precision Exploit can target weak spots in the environment, while Malfunction disables electrical systems. Cyber-attack is similar, but instead of destroying those systems, it turns them against your opponents.
The PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S game, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, is in development. Owlcat Games will share more details, including a potential release date, during the Xbox Partner Preview this week. You can also watch the latest trailer to get a glimpse of a new danger facing the ship’s crew.
