After 28 Years Later, the Biggest Zombie Movie Ever Needs Its Cancelled Sequel To Be Resurrected

The recent success of 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has brought zombies back into the spotlight, making it a great time to revisit previously cancelled projects. Zombies were hugely popular in the early 2010s thanks to shows like The Walking Dead and The Last of Us, but interest waned as there became too much zombie content. Now, after a period of decline, zombies are popular again.

After a brief dip in popularity, zombies are back in the spotlight thanks to shows like HBO’s The Last of Us and the upcoming 28 Years Later series. These high-quality productions have given the genre a boost in credibility and acclaim. That makes now a great time to revisit one of the most popular zombie films from the 2010s with a sequel.

Now Is The Perfect Time For World War Z 2

Released in 2013, World War Z was a key part of the zombie craze that swept the 2010s, significantly impacting the genre. The film, directed by Marc Foster, stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a U.N. investigator working to uncover the origin of a zombie outbreak and prevent a global apocalypse. With a budget of $269 million, the movie earned $540 million, making it a financially successful and widely enjoyed film.

Although the first World War Z movie did well, a second one was never made. Before the first film even came out, Paramount Pictures hoped to create a three-movie series if it was a hit. They started working on a sequel, bringing in J.A. Bayona as director and Steven Knight to write the script. A release date of June 9, 2017, was set, and fans were looking forward to World War Z 2, but ultimately the project didn’t move forward.

Despite initial plans, the sequel to World War Z faced numerous delays. Bayona departed the project in January 2016, and filming hadn’t begun by February 2017. While a fall 2018 start date was considered, it was later moved to June 2019. Ultimately, the project was officially canceled in February 2019, ending any chance of a sequel being made.

With the recent success of 28 Years Later, there’s renewed interest in reviving World War Z 2. Because Brad Pitt remains a popular actor, framing the movie as a continuation of the original – a legacy sequel – could generate even more excitement than previously planned.

As a huge fan of World War Z, I was so excited to hear some positive news late in 2025! Paramount actually mentioned that a sequel was a possibility when they were talking about future projects. It really gave me hope that World War Z 2 might actually happen, and now with the success of 28 Years Later, I’m even more optimistic that Paramount will finally move forward with it!
