After being gone for almost ten years, a popular version of Superboy is returning to comics. As the current DC K.O. series nears its conclusion, DC Comics is starting to plan its next stories. Following a successful period called the All In era, DC will continue to build excitement with its new Next Level initiative. They recently gave fans a preview of what’s coming next March, and a particularly thrilling storyline will unfold within the Superman comic book series.
With Superman gone, the focus is shifting to the younger Kryptonians, particularly Superboy, in a storyline called “Reign of the Superboys.” Every Superman-related comic, from Action Comics to Superman, will include Superboy in some capacity. Notably, Superman Unlimited #11 will center around Jon Kent battling a powerful demon who will become a future enemy. The comic hints at a dramatic turning point for Jon, even suggesting it could be his last appearance as Superboy, while also promising a classic Super Sons-era flashback on the cover.
Jon Kent is Back as Superboy, But Has He Really Ever Left?

It doesn’t seem long ago that we were enjoying stories about Jon Kent as Superboy during the Rebirth era. It was fun to see Clark Kent as a father to a son who was half-human and half-Kryptonian, and the adventures of Jon and Damian in Super Sons were particularly enjoyable. But those stories changed when Brian Michael Bendis began writing Superman for DC Comics. One of his first major decisions was to dramatically age Jon Kent, jumping him from 11 years old to 17.
It was disappointing for many fans when DC Comics decided to keep Jon Kent as an adult, even though they hoped he’d be returned to his original age. A few years ago, Jon became Earth’s Superman, and he continued in that role even after his father, the original Superman, came back. While a recent issue of Shazam! briefly showed Jon as Superboy again, it strongly implied that DC wasn’t going to reverse this change and would continue moving the story forward.
Despite being grown up for almost ten years now, the younger version of Jon Kent, as Superboy, has appeared in comics fairly often. Beyond the recent story where he was briefly made young again, DC has published new stories set during his time with Robin as the ‘Super Sons,’ and different versions of him have shown up in titles like ‘The Flash.’ Even though DC has insisted the original Superboy won’t return, they keep bringing that version back in some form. This makes us wonder: is Superboy’s upcoming appearance just another hint, or could it signal a more lasting change?
This is the Moment Superboy Fans Have Been Waiting For

It’s unclear exactly how Superboy will return in the next issue of Superman Unlimited, based on the official description. However, it hints at Jon battling a creature from the fourth dimension, which in DC Comics often represents time. This suggests Jon might be made younger during the fight. Another possibility is that a younger version of Jon could be pulled from the past to join the present-day DC Universe. But since the cover doesn’t show the adult Jon, I think he’ll likely be de-aged.
As a longtime DC fan, I’m honestly surprised they’re considering this after sticking to their guns for so long! I know both versions of Superboy have their supporters – the classic one and the grown-up Jon – but it’s interesting timing. The fact that Dan Slott is writing Superman Unlimited #11 is… telling. If anyone’s willing to shake things up and make bold choices with a character, it’s him – just look at what he did with Spider-Man. I really hope this isn’t just a false alarm, though. Jon’s felt a little stuck lately, and honestly, I think a bit of a reset could be exactly what he needs.
As a long-time comic book fan, I’ve learned not to judge a book by its cover, but DC is definitely trying to get me hyped about “Reign of the Superboys!” And honestly? It’s working a little. I’d really love to see Jon Kent back in the Superboy role, but DC has been hesitant to commit to that in the past, so I’m trying to stay realistic. I’ll need to see how things play out with DC Next Level for a few months before I can tell if this is a real, lasting change for Superboy or just another temporary tease.
